William Augustus Darling

William Augustus Darling (born December 27, 1817 in Newark , New Jersey , † May 26, 1895 in New York City ) was an American politician . Between 1865 and 1867 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Augustus Darling was born and raised in Newark about two and a half years after the end of the British-American War . During this time he attended public schools. He then moved to New York City, where he worked first as a clerk and later as a grocer. Darling was a director of the Mercantile Library Association . He served eleven years as a private and officer in the New York National Guard . In 1847 he became Deputy Receiver of Taxes in New York City - a position he held until 1854. He was then President of the Third Avenue Railroad between 1854 and 1865 . Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party .

In the 1864 congressional election for the 39th Congress , Darling was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the ninth constituency of New York , where he succeeded Anson Herrick on March 4, 1865 . In 1866 he was defeated in his re-election bid and was eliminated from the after March 3, 1867 Congress of.

During his time in Congress, he ran unsuccessfully for Mayor of New York City in 1866.
