John HG Vehslage

John Herman George Vehslage (born December 20, 1842 in New York City , † July 21, 1904 ) was an American politician . Between 1897 and 1899 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Herman George Vehslage was born and raised in New York City about three and a half years before the outbreak of the Mexican-American War . During this time he attended public schools. He then worked as an office clerk in a grocery store. He also went into coal and wood deals.

During the Civil War , he enlisted in the Third Cavalry of the New York National Guard in 1863 . On February 15, 1864, Governor Horatio Seymour promoted him to captain . He was then appointed Inspector of Rifle Practice - a position he held until 1880, when the regiment was disbanded by Governor Alonzo B. Cornell . He then served as a supernumerary until November 12, 1883 , when he was honorably dismissed by Governor Grover Cleveland .

Between 1894 and 1896 he was a member of the New York State Assembly . Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .

In the congressional elections of 1896 for the 55th Congress Vehslage was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the seventh constituency of New York , where he succeeded Franklin Bartlett on March 4, 1897 . In 1898 he suffered a defeat on his re-nomination and resigned from Congress on March 3, 1899 .

He died in New York City on July 21, 1904 and was then buried in Lutheran Cemetery in Brooklyn .
