Josiah Hasbrouck (born March 5, 1755 in New Paltz , Province of New York , † March 19, 1821 in Plattekill , New York ) was an American politician . He represented New York State in the US House of Representatives between 1803 and 1805 and between 1817 and 1819 .

Career

Josiah Hasbrouck grew up during the British colonial era, studied and completed his preparatory studies. He went about common purchases. During the Revolutionary War in 1780 he served as a second lieutenant in the third regiment of the Ulster County Militia . After the war he was Town Supervisor of New Paltz between 1784 and 1786, 1793, 1794 and between 1799 and 1805 . He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1796, 1797, 1802, and 1806 .

As an opponent of an overly strong central government, he joined the Democratic-Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson at that time . On April 28, 1803, he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in a by-election in the seventh electoral district of New York to fill the vacancy created by the death of David Thomas . He retired from the after March 3, 1805 Congress of.

After that he worked in agriculture. During this time he had Locust Lawn built on his 1,000  acre farm in 1814 , which was designed in federal style . It has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1974 .

In the congressional elections of 1816 he was re-elected to the US House of Representatives in the seventh constituency of New York, where he succeeded Samuel R. Betts on March 4, 1817 . He left the Congress after March 3, 1819. As a congressman, he chaired the Committee on Expenditures in the State Department ( 15th Congress ).

He died on March 19, 1821 at Plattekill and was then buried in the family cemetery, but later reburied in the New Paltz Rural Cemetery in New Paltz.
