Joseph Kirkland (politician)

Joseph Kirkland (born January 18, 1770 in Newent Society (now part of Lisbon ), Colony of Connecticut , † January 26, 1844 in Utica , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1821 and 1823 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Joseph Kirkland was born in Newent Society (then part of Norwich ) about five years before the outbreak of the War of Independence . In 1790 he graduated from Yale College . He studied law . He was admitted to the bar in 1794 and then began practicing in New Hartford , Oneida County . He served in the New York State Assembly in 1804 and 1805 . In 1813 he moved to Utica. Kirkland was District Attorney in the fifth district of New York between 1813 and 1816. He served in the New York State Assembly for 1818, 1820, 1821, and 1825. Politically he belonged to the Federalist Party .

In the 1820 congressional elections for the 17th Congress , Kirkland was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 16th electoral district of New York , where he succeeded Henry R. Storrs on March 4, 1821 . He retired from the after March 3, 1823 Congress of.

After his time at Congress he went back to his practice as a lawyer. Between 1832 and 1836 he was mayor of Utica. He died there on January 26, 1844 and was then buried in Forest Hill Cemetery .
