David A. Ogden

David A. Ogden (born January 10, 1770 in Morristown , Province of New Jersey , † June 9, 1829 in Montreal , Canada ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1817 and 1819 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

David A. Ogden was born in Morristown, Morris County , about five years before the War of Independence . He attended King's College (now Columbia University ) in New York City . Then he studied law . He was admitted to the bar in November 1791 and then began practicing in Newark . In 1796 he became Counselor at Law in New Jersey. He moved to Hamilton (now Waddington ) in St. Lawrence County , where he continued to practice as a lawyer. Between 1811 and 1815 he was associate judge onCourt of Common Pleas in St. Lawrence County. He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1814 and 1815 . Politically he belonged to the Federalist Party .

In the 1816 congressional election for the 15th Congress , Ogden was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 18th electoral district of New York , where he succeeded Moss Kent on March 4, 1817 . In 1818 he suffered a defeat in his re-election and resigned from Congress on March 3, 1819 .

He was First Judge at the Court of Common Pleas between 1820 and 1824 and between 1825 and 1829 . As one of the commissioners, he was responsible for defining the border between Canada and the United States. He died in Montreal on June 9, 1829 and was then buried in Brookside Cemetery in Waddington.
