John W. Cady

John Watts Cady (born June 28, 1790 in Florida , New York , † January 5, 1854 in Johnstown , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1823 and 1825 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives . Congressman Daniel Cady was his uncle.

Career

John Watts Cady was born in Montgomery County in Florida about seven years after the Revolutionary War ended . He attended school at Old Stone Manse in Fort Hunter and graduated from Union College in Schenectady in 1808 . Then he studied law . After receiving his license to practice law, he began practicing in Johnstown (then Montgomery County). He was a Town Clerk in Johnstown in 1814, 1816 and 1817 . Between 1818 and 1822 and between 1826 and 1829 he served as a county supervisor . He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1822 .

As a result of a fragmentation of the Democratic Republican Party before and during the presidency of John Quincy Adams (1825-1829), he joined the Adams-Clay faction. In the 1822 congressional elections for the 18th Congress , Cady was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 16th electoral district of New York , where he succeeded Joseph Kirkland on March 4, 1823 . He was married to Maira Caroline Livingston (1794–1833), daughter of Catharine Marsh (1772–1854) and Beekman Livingston (1762–1842). The couple had four children together:
