John Wells (born July 1, 1817 in Johnstown , New York , † May 30, 1877 ibid) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1851 and 1853 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Wells was born and raised in Johnstown, Fulton County , two years after the end of the British-American War . He attended Johnstown Academy and graduated from Union College in Schenectady in 1835 . Then he studied law . He was admitted to the bar in 1839 and then began practicing in Palmyra . He returned to Johnstown where he continued his practice as a lawyer. He was elected a Fulton County judge, a position he held from June 1847 until his resignation in December 1851. Politically, he was a member of the Whig Party .

In the congressional election of 1850 for the 32nd Congress , Wells was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 16th electoral district of New York , where he succeeded Hugh White on March 4, 1851 . Since he on a run again in 1852 renounced, he left the after March 3, 1853 Congress of.

After his time at Congress, he went back to his work as a lawyer, but also devoted himself to literary work. He died on May 30, 1877 in Johnstown and was buried in the cemetery of the same name.
