John Knox Stewart
John Knox Stewart (born October 20, 1853 in Perth , New York , † June 27, 1919 in Amsterdam , New York) was an American politician . Between 1899 and 1903 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .
Career
John Knox Stewart was born in Fulton County about eight years before the outbreak of the Civil War . In 1860 the family moved to Amsterdam. There he attended public schools and the Amsterdam Academy . He then went on to manufacture paper until 1885, and from then on the manufacture of textiles. In 1885 he became sewer commissioner in Amsterdam - a post he held until 1890. He was director of the Farmers' National Bank of Amsterdam and the Chuctanunda Gas Light Company, and vice-president of the Amsterdam Board of Trade . In 1889 he was a member of the New York State Assembly . Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party .
In the 1898 congressional election for the 56th Congress , Stewart was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 21st constituency of New York , where he succeeded David F. Wilber on March 4, 1899 . He was re-elected once. 1902 he was defeated in his second re-election bid and was eliminated from the after March 3, 1903 Congress of.
After his time at the congress he went back to the manufacture of textiles, a business that he carried out until his death. He died on June 27, 1919 in Amsterdam. His body was then interred in Greenhill Cemetery .
