Archibald S. Clarke

Archibald Smith Clarke (born 1788 in Prince George's County , Maryland , † December 4, 1821 in Clarence , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . In 1816 and 1817 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives . Congressman Staley N. Clarke was his brother.

Career

Archibald Smith Clarke was born on a plantation in Pince George's County about five years after the Revolutionary War ended . He attended community schools and high school. Then he studied law . After receiving his license to practice law, he began practicing in Niagara County . He was in 1808 and 1809 guardianship and probate judge ( surrogate ) in Niagara County. He was a member of the New York State Assembly between 1809 and 1811 and the New York Senate between 1813 and 1816 . He also worked as a county clerk in 1815 and 1816 .

As an opponent of an overly strong central government, he joined the Democratic-Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson at that time . He was elected to the 14th Congress in a by-election in the 21st electoral district of New York in 1816  to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Peter Buell Porter . He took up his service in the US House of Representatives on December 2, 1816, but left the Congress after March 3, 1817 .

He died on December 4, 1821 in Clarence, Erie County, and was then buried in Ledge Lawn Cemetery in Newstead .
