Ela Collins (born February 14, 1786 in Meriden , Connecticut , † November 23, 1848 in Lowville , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1823 and 1825 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives . Congressman William Collins was his son.

Career

Ela Collins was born in New Haven County about two and a half years after the American Revolutionary War ended . He attended the Clinton Academy . Collins studied law . After obtaining his license to practice law, he began practicing in Lowville in 1807. He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1815 . Between 1815 and 1818 he was District Attorney for Counties Lewis , Jefferson and St. Lawrence and from June 11, 1818 to March 24, 1840 of Lewis County. In 1821 he took part as a delegate to the New York Constituent Assembly .

As a result of a fragmentation of the Democratic Republican Party before and during the presidency of John Quincy Adams (1825-1829), he joined the Crawford faction. In the 1822 congressional elections for the 18th Congress , Collins was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 20th constituency of New York , where he succeeded David Woodcock and William B.
