Walter M. Chandler

Walter M. Chandler (born December 8, 1867 in Yazoo City , Mississippi , † March 16, 1935 in New York City ) was an American politician . Between 1913 and 1919 and between 1921 and 1923 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Walter M. Chandler was born in Yazoo County about two years after the Civil War ended . He attended public schools, the University of Virginia at Charlottesville and the University of Mississippi at Oxford . He taught at a school. In 1897 he graduated from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor . He studied history and law at the Humboldt University in Berlin and Ruprecht Karls University in Heidelberg . He was admitted to the bar in 1897 and began in Dallas ( Texas to practice). In 1900 he moved to New York City, where he continued his practice as a lawyer. In addition, he devoted himself to writing and gave lectures.

Politically, he belonged to the Progressive Party . In the 1912 congressional elections for the 63rd Congress , Chandler was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 19th  electoral district of New York , where he succeeded John Emory Andrus on March 4, 1913 . He was re-elected twice in a row. During this time the Progressive Party broke up. In 1917 he joined the Republican Party . In his re-election in 1918 , he suffered a defeat to the Democrat Joseph Rowan and resigned after March 3, 1919 from Congress . In the 1920 congressional elections for the 67th Congress , he was re-elected to the US House of Representatives in the 19th electoral district of New York, where he began his service on March 4, 1921. In 1922 he suffered a defeat when he ran for re-election and left Congress after March 3, 1923. When his successor Samuel Marx died, the Democrat Sol Bloom was elected to the 68th Congress in a by- election, which Chandler challenged unsuccessfully. In 1924 , Chandler ran again unsuccessfully for a seat in the US House of Representatives.

During the First World War he was a faculty member and lecturer at the American Expeditionary Force University in Beaune ( France ). After his time in Congress, he resumed his practice as a lawyer in New York City, where he died on March 16, 1935. He was on the West Evergreen Cemetery in Jacksonville ( Florida buried).
