Orsamus B. Matteson

Orsamus Benajah Matteson (born August 28, 1805 in Verona , New York , † December 22, 1889 in Utica , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1849 and 1851 and between 1853 and 1859 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Orsamus Matteson was born in Oneida County about seven years before the outbreak of the British-American War . He attended community schools there. Matteson studied law in Utica. After receiving his license to practice law in 1830, he began practicing there. In the years 1834 and 1836 he held the post of City Attorney in Utica. He was also a State Supreme Court Commissioner .

Politically, he was a member of the Whig Party at the time. In the congressional elections of 1846 he ran unsuccessfully for the 30th Congress . He was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 20th  constituency of New York in 1846 , where he succeeded Timothy Jenkins on March 4, 1848 . Matteson suffered a defeat in his 1850 re-election and resigned from Congress on March 3, 1851 . In the congressional elections of 1852 for the 33rd Congress , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in the 20th constituency of New York, where he succeeded Timothy Jenkins on March 4, 1853. He was re-elected twice in a row. When he was elected to the 34th Congress , he ran for the Opposition Party . Matteson resigned from his seat on February 27, 1857, but was elected as a Republican to the 35th Congress . He left the Congress after March 3, 1859. During his Congressional tenure, he chaired the Committee on District of Columbia in the 34th Congress . He also campaigned for a scheme for the construction of St. Mary's Falls Ship Canal .

Matteson then went into lumbering, iron making, and buying large tracts of land. He died in Utica on December 22, 1889 and was then buried in Forest Hill Cemetery .
