Elijah Spencer (* 1775 in Columbia County , New York Province, † December 15, 1852 in Benton , New York ) was an American politician . Between 1821 and 1823 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Elijah Spencer received a modest education. His childhood was overshadowed by the War of Independence . In 1791 he moved to Jerusalem - at that time still part of Ontario County . He settled in the part that was separated in 1803 and became the Town of Vernon, later renamed Benton. There he worked in agriculture. In 1810 he became a supervisor at Benton - a post he held until 1819. He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1819 .

As an opponent of an overly strong central government, he joined the Democratic-Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson at that time . In the 1820 congressional election for the 17th Congress , Spencer was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 21st  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Nathaniel Allen and Albert H. Tracy on March 4, 1821 , who previously together represented the 21st district in the US House of Representatives. He retired from the after March 3, 1823 Congress of.

Between 1826 and 1828 he was again a supervisor in Benton. In 1846 he took part in the New York Constituent Assembly . He was also active in agriculture again. He died on December 15, 1852 in Benton and was then buried in Lake View Cemetery in Penn Yan .
