Human. : II: Nature. (stylized as HVMAN.: ||: NATVRE. ) is the ninth studio album by the Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish . It was released on April 10, 2020 via Nuclear Blast .

Emergence

In the summer of 2016, the band announced that they would take a break the following year. The musicians used this break for their own side projects. Tuomas Holopainen released an album together with his wife Johanna Kurkela and Troy Donockley under the name Auri . Emppu Vuorinen released another album with his second band Brother Firetribe , while the singer Floor Jansen gave birth to a daughter in March 2017.

Tuomas Holopainen announced in February 2018 that he had already written six songs for the new album and that he is hoping for a release in 2020. Finally, in November 2018, the music was finished.

The album was recorded between August and October 2019 at the Röskö campground, the Petrax Studios in Hollola , the Finnvox Studios in Helsinki and the Troykington Castle studio, directed by Tero Kinnunen, Mikko Karmila and Troy Donockley. The album was mixed by Mikko Karmila, Tuomas Holopainen and Tero Kinnunen at Finnvox Studios. The mastering was done by Mika Jussila. For the song Noise one was music video releases.

background

Tuomas Holopainen described Human. : II: Nature. as a concept album that was not intended. When writing the texts he noticed that many of his texts to the humanity deal and the words human and nature ( Engl. Man and nature ) are very common in the texts. Since people sing songs about humanity on the songs of the first CD and the second CD contains an instrumental about nature, he came up with the idea for the album title, which Holopainen called a “little pretty play on words ”. According to Holopainen, the only reason that the album was released as a double CD was that the album is around 85 minutes long and therefore the material does not fit on one CD.

The songs on the first CD all deal with the human species , according to Holopainen . The song Shoemaker is about the life and work of impact researcher Eugene Shoemaker . The song Pan would celebrate the human imagination , according to Troy Donockley . It is about the all-encompassing achievements of civilization and culture , but not about the eponymous deity of Greek mythology . How's the Heart? deals with human empathy .
