Nightwish is a symphonic metal - band from the Finnish town of Kitee . The band around the keyboard player Tuomas Holopainen is one of the most successful metal bands in Finland and, together with the trained soprano Tarja Turunen, was considered to be a style-defining element of their genre. Nightwish's music is heavily inspired by film scores .

In 2005 the band separated from Turunen and introduced Anette Olzon as the new singer in May 2007 . At the end of September of the same year, Dark Passion Play, the first album with Olzon, was released. It reached platinum status in Finland on the very first day and climbed to number 1 on the album charts there, as in Germany and other European countries. From September 2007 to September 2009 the band was on a world tour. Nightwish and Anette Olzon separated in October 2012 during a world tour. This lasted until 2013 and was initially continued on an interim basis by Floor Jansen on vocals, who later became a permanent member of the band.

By June 2013, the band had sold over eight million records and played concerts in 40 countries. The most commercially successful album at the time was Once with over 2.3 million units sold worldwide.

history

Foundation (1996–1997)

Nightwish was founded by Tuomas Holopainen. He has played in various bands for a while but rarely had any influence on songwriting . Overall, Holopainen had the feeling that there was “not enough room musically there”, which is why he developed his musical idea of “atmospheric campfire music” during a night at the campfire in July 1996. Together with Turunen, who was known as an excellent singer at school , and the guitarist Erno "Emppu" Vuorinen , he began to implement his idea of a project that would make "acoustic, atmospheric music in the style of Ulvers ' Kveldssanger " ".

From October to December 1996 the band recorded their first demo in the Huvikeskus studio . It contained the plays The Forever Moments , Nightwish and Etiäinen , which Holopainen had written during his military service . The piece Nightwish finally gave the band their name. At that time the band only used keyboard, acoustic guitar and vocals. At the beginning of 1997 the band tried out with Jukka "Julius" Nevalainen how the pieces would sound with drums . During the next band rehearsals, the acoustic guitar was increasingly replaced by an electric guitar . During this phase the overall sound of the band developed more and more towards metal . Turunen's voice was mainly responsible for this stylistic change, which Holopainen found too multifaceted to be reduced to acoustic campfire music.

In April 1997 the band recorded another seven track demo in the Huvikeskus studio. The band sent it to record labels such as Century Media , Massacre Records and Spinefarm Records , but received no response. The first review of the demo by the press was summed up by the band members with the words “Shit band, shit equipment - no commercial potential” and felt as devastating. From this demo only 500 records were pressed, which today are considered the most wanted rarities of the band. These records are now regularly sold for several hundred euros at internet auction houses. In early summer, Holopainen was on a European tour with Nattvindens Gråt . Spinefarm Records employee Ewo Rytkönen also took part on the tour, listening to several demos from various bands during the trips to the concerts. At first, Holopainen did not dare to hand over the demo of his own band to Rytkönen, but after long persuasion from his bandmate Tapio Wilska, he finally did so and thus sparked the interest of Spinefarm, who finally signed Nightwish for two albums in May 1997.

Four more tracks were recorded in August, which together with the seven tracks from the second demo formed the debut album Angels Fall First . The split single The Carpenter was released in October 1997 and contained the title track as well as the songs Red Light In My Eyes, pt. 2 by Children of Bodom and Only Dust Moves by Thy Serpent . After two weeks, the single had risen to number 8 in the Finnish single charts, in spring 1999 it even reached number 3. Angels Fall First was released in early November 1997 and reached 31st place in the Finnish charts in spring 1998. On December 31, 1997, Nightwish gave the first concert in Kitee. There followed six more appearances in the winter of 1997/1998 before Erno Vuorinen and Jukka Nevalainen began to do their military service. Holopainen moved to Kuopio to study environmental engineering, while Turunen was accepted at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki , where she studied classical singing.

First successes (1998-2000)

Tarja Turunen at Pukkelpop 2005

In April 1998, the band made a music video for The Carpenter , which was featured on MTV3's youth show Jyrki at the end of May . Back then the band was looking for a permanent bass player . In the summer Sami Vänskä , who already played in a band with Holopainen at Nattvindens Gråt, filled this gap. From August to October 1998 the band recorded the second album Oceanborn . Tapio Wilska, who was working as a roadie for Nightwish at the time and was friends with the band, acted as guest vocalist on two pieces . On November 13th, a live video for the song Sacrament of Wilderness was recorded at a concert in Kitee , which was released as a single on November 26th. In addition to the title track, the titles The Crow and the Warrior from Darkwoods My Betrothed , where Holopainen also previously participated, and Burning Flames Embrace from Eternal Tears of Sorrow were included. The single reached number 1 in the Finnish charts. On December 7th, the album Oceanborn followed , which reached number 5 on the Finnish album charts. In the winter of 1999 Nightwish played many concerts in Finland. It was during this time that the Witten- based label Drakkar Entertainment became aware of the band. Drakkar secured the license rights for the German-speaking countries and released the album on May 31, 1999. Before that, the album had already received excellent reviews in the metal press, including the top 10 in Rock Hard . The album entered the German charts at number 74 and gave the band their first chart success outside of Finland. In March 1999, the Howard Blake cover Walking in the Air was the second single for Oceanborn . For the solar eclipse of August 11, 1999 , the band recorded the piece Sleeping Sun and released it together with the older pieces Walking in the Air , Angels Fall First and Swanheart . This single was sold 15,000 times in the first month in Germany alone, but only reached number 34 in the German single charts at the second attempt, a good six years later. This was followed by a European tour as the opening act for the German power metal band Rage . Holopainen reports this tour as an important experience for the band. She gave Nightwish “trust” and played a major role in finding one's own identity: “At times we saw ourselves as a horde of clowns and a diva who had escaped from the opera who played heavy metal together.”

In early 2000, the band went back to the Huvikeskus studio to record their third album, Wishmaster . Nightwish later took part in the Finnish preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2000 with the piece Sleepwalker . Although the group got by far the most votes from the audience, the jury chose the penultimate place, so that they ended up in second place behind Nina Åström . In a later interview, Holopainen spoke of an “experiment” that was “intended to be a shock effect”: “The Grand Prix represents everything I hate about music, the corrupt side of music; I could throw up every time I watch the song contest. So I thought it would be cool to join in and punch them in the face with a Finnish metal band all in black, moshing their heads ”.

On May 19, the album Wishmaster was released , which entered the Finnish charts at number 1 and stayed there for three weeks. Within a month the album received a gold record. In Germany the album was released on May 29th and reached number 21 in the charts. The Wishmaster tour began with a concert at Kitee, where the band received gold records for Oceanborn and Sacrament of Wilderness . A short time later, Walking in the Air and Sleeping Sun were also gilded. In July 2000 the band played a tour in South America for the first time . This was followed by appearances at the Wacken Open Air , two concerts in Canada and a first own European tour with Sinergy and Eternal Tears of Sorrow . The final concert on December 29, 2000 in Tampere was recorded and released in April 2001 under the title From Wishes to Eternity on DVD, VHS and CD. At the end of the concert, the band received the platinum record for Wishmaster and the gold record for Deep Silent Complete . It was the first music DVD to be produced in Finland. In spring 2001 Nightwish were nominated together with the Guano Apes , Hammerfall , Soulfly and Such a Surge for the Echo in the category “Best New Rock / Metal Act”, but the award went to the Guano Apes.

In March 2001 the band recorded four new songs, including the Gary Moore cover Over the Hills and Far Away , which were released as an EP in Finland in June . The European version also contained live recordings of the From Wishes to Eternity concert. In the summer the band shot a video for Over the Hills and Far Away in Estonia and played at Wacken Open Air as well as elsewhere in Europe. In September another tour took place in Finland with To / Die / For . Later, due to the many tours, there were disagreements in the band, which led to Holopainen deciding to break up the band after a concert in Nivala . However, he changed his mind after his long-time friend Sami Vänskä, with whom Holopainen was no longer able to play, was forced to leave the band.

After all, it was Ewo Rytkönen who informed Vänskä of his expulsion. Vänskä's successor was Marco Hietala , who was known to Nightwish as the Sinergy bassist on the 2000 European tour. In addition, Hietala has been playing in the very successful Finnish band Tarot since the early eighties , where he is also responsible for the singing. This opened up new opportunities for Holopainen in terms of songwriting. Rytkönen quit his job at Spinefarm Records and founded King Foo Entertainment, which immediately took over the management of the band.

In the spring of 2002 Nightwish recorded the album Century Child . The first single Ever Dream reached gold status after the first two days of sales. The album did this in just two hours in May 2002, setting a new sales record in Finland. The platinum record followed two weeks later, with 30,000 copies sold . By the end of the year Nightwish had sold 59,000 copies in Finland. The band was awarded two Emmas . In Germany the album reached number five. On the album, the band interpreted, among other things, the title track of the musical The Phantom of the Opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber . In April 2002 there were rumors that Turunen would leave the band in the fall to concentrate on their studies, but the band only paused a year until the fall of 2003. Before that, an extensive tour took place that also led to South America. In Europe, Charon and After Forever were supporting acts.

The band members used the break for activities in their own projects. Holopainen recorded an album with For My Pain… and went on tour with Timo Rautiainen yes Trio Niskalaukaus . Marco Hietala released a new album with Tarot, while Emppu Vuorinen joined the band Altaria . Jukka Nevalainen played on the band Sethian's debut album . Turunen continued her studies and gave solo concerts. On October 6, 2003, the second DVD, End of Innocence, was released with a two-hour documentary in which Holopainen and Jukka Nevalainen review the previous band history.

In November 2003 the band went into the studio and recorded the fifth album Once . The first single Nemo was released in April. With the single, the band cracked the top 10 of the German charts for the first time. The album was released on June 7, 2004 and reached gold status in Finland on the same day. In Germany, Once went to number one on the album charts and sold 80,000 copies in the first week alone.

Once was the first Nightwish album that was not released by Drakkar Entertainment in Europe, but was released by Nuclear Blast . After separating published Drakkar in October 2004, the best of Tales from the Elvenpath , thus reaching even after the contract expires some commercial success and chart positions in the top 20. The Finnish Post printed a special stamp and the brewery Pirkanmaan Uusi Panimo brewed by the end of 2004 a Nightwish beer . The tour for the album Once began in June 2004 with a concert in Kitee. During the tour, Nightwish played 130 concerts in Japan, Australia, South America, the United States and Europe. The final concert on October 21, 2005 in the Hartwall Areena in Helsinki was recorded and later released on DVD and CD under the name End of an Era .

With Anette Olzon as singer (2005–2012)

On the evening after the final concert of the Once World Tour on October 21, 2005, Turunen received a letter from the band - with the request to open it the next morning - which was published the next evening on the official website in Finnish, German and English was published. In the letter, Holopainen accuses her of seeing herself only as a "guest musician" and acting mainly out of greed, which all too often came at the expense of the fans. Her relationship with her husband Marcelo Cabuli, who “turned her from a lovable girl into a diva”, is particularly attacked. In addition to Holopainen, the three other band members also signed the letter. On October 25th, Turunen replied on her website in another open letter, in which she did not respond to the criticism of the content, but expressed herself very concerned and criticized that the band had not sought any other way of discussion and private matters in the light of the Public. She later commented on the contents of the letter at a press conference in which she presented her view of the nine years in Nightwish. The following year, her husband published a question-and-answer list in which he u. a. Holopainen accused that he wanted Turunen for himself and only fired her because she spurned him and married someone else (point 36). Holopainen denies this to this day.

Anette Olzon on Halloween 2007

In September 2006, the recordings for the new album began, initially without a new singer. On January 16, 2007, it was announced on the official website that a singer had been selected from over 2,000 demos sent in; it should be presented in May. Since the single was illegally published prematurely on the Internet, the band moved the release date forward by five days, and on May 24, 2007 the Swede Anette Olzon was introduced as the new singer. The exclusive download single Eva was released on May 25th , the proceeds of which were donated to the children's aid organization Die Arche . At the end of August, the second single Amaranth was released before the new album Dark Passion Play was released worldwide on September 28th . In Finland the album was already available two days earlier and sold 42,000 times on the first day of sale, which led to another platinum award. Just two days after its publication, it reached double platinum with 60,000 copies sold. The first concert with Olzon was officially announced for October 6th in Hangar 11 in Tel Aviv ; in fact, concerts took place in Helsinki , Tallinn and Hamburg on September 22nd, 26th and 28th . These appearances were announced as concerts by Nightwish cover bands to camouflage themselves. In October and November there was a tour of North America with Paradise Lost , which was followed by a Northern European tour in December. 2008 started with a New Years concert in Helsinki and a tour of Japan, China and Australia in January and early February. The European tour began on February 17, 2008. Pain provided support for this tour and, for the Germany concerts, Krieger also provided support. It ended on April 19, 2008 with a concert in Lisbon. On February 15, 2008 Nightwish received the Echo as the best band of the year in the international rock / alternative category . That evening the band also performed with their hit single Amaranth . At the Finnish Metal Awards, Nightwish was named Band of the Year and Tuomas Holopainen was named Musician of the Year . Nightwish was also nominated for five Emma's and received at the Emma Gala on March 8, 2008 the awards in the categories of Best Metal Album , Best Album and Band of the Year . In the categories of Best Song (Amaranth) and the Audience Award for Best Finnish Artist , they received nothing. In May 2008, a 19-concert tour of America took place, which began on May 2 with a sold out performance in Mexico City and ended on May 31 in Mokena, Illinois. In the following months (June to August) Nightwish performed at several European rock festivals , including as headliners at Wacken Open Air . Another North America and South America tour followed, which ended on November 23, 2008 in Santiago de Chile . This concert was also the last Nightwish concert in 2008.

The CD / DVD pack Made In Hong Kong (And In Various Other Places) was released on March 13, 2009. It contains, in addition to a 37-minute documentary about the band, live and bonus tracks from the album Dark Passion Play . On January 20, 2010 , the EP Erämaan Viimeinen with two additional tracks (two versions by Escapist ) was released exclusively in German-speaking countries in connection with the German Metal Hammer .

Project Imaginaerum (2011 to 2013)

On February 10, 2011, the band's seventh studio album was announced on the official Nightwish website. The first single - Storytime - was released on November 11, 2011. The album Imaginaerum was released on November 30th in Finland and the rest of Europe on December 2nd, 2011.

The music on the album is supposed to tie in with the symphonic style of the two previous albums Dark Passion Play and Once ; Nightwish are again using the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the London-based choir Metro Voices . The sound that developed in the course of the recordings was described by the band's founder Holopainen as "epic", "passionate" and "breathtaking". In the press there is talk of a courageous, varied and in spite of everything still coherent album with musical-like tendencies.

The 13 songs on the album serve as the basis for the film Imaginaerum by Nightwish , which premiered on November 10, 2012 in the Hartwall Areena in Helsinki. They are all contained in the film and underline it in terms of content and atmosphere. Lined up in a row, the pieces tell a self-contained story that is situated in the fantasy realm; However, the lyrics and the music were developed by Holopainen in such a way that the individual songs on the album should also work separately.

Floor Jansen performing live with Nightwish at the Tuska Open Air Metal Festival , 2013

As part of this project, the band started their Imaginaerum World Tour in 2012. Six concerts took place in Germany. On September 28, the band played in Denver and replaced the sick singer Anette Olzon with Elize Ryd ( Amaranthe , Kamelot ) and Alissa White-Gluz ( The Agonist , Kamelot, Arch Enemy ); Olzon then wrote in her weblog that she had not been asked whether it was okay for her and that “the decision was wrong”.

On October 1, 2012, Nightwish announced on their website that Olzon had left the band "by mutual agreement". In order to continue the ongoing Imaginaerum World Tour and not have to cancel any concerts, the Dutch former after-forever singer Floor Jansen will act as singer for the upcoming performances . A few hours after this report, Olzon closed her official weblog. This was continued a few days later at the request of the fans. Rumors that Tarja Turunen would return to Nightwish denied this; she would “only be ready if the entire management and all band members were replaced beforehand”. The separation from Olzon surprised her "unfortunately not at all". In the following weeks there were several joint appearances by Tarja and Anette Olzon. This was followed by allegations on the part of Anette Olzon that she had no say in the band and that she was fired because of her hospital stays. She was there because she was pregnant with her third child. The band members would not have visited her in the hospital either.

With Floor Jansen as singer (since 2012)

Nightwish live at Wacken Open Air 2018

Jansen's statement that the band invited her to “go on tour with them in November, December and January” a week before her first assignment, fueled speculation that the band management might have been planning a change of singer for some time. One week after breaking up with Olzon, Nightwish released a first band photo with singer Floor Jansen. Floor Jansen has been an official band member since October 2013. In addition, Troy Donockley was permanently accepted into the band. In 2013 the band performed again at the Wacken Open Air Festival. The lavishly staged concert was filmed and appeared on the live DVD Showtime, Storytime on November 29th, along with a tour documentary .

After completing his solo project The Life and Times of Scrooge , published in April 2014 , Tuomas Holopainen announced that he would concentrate fully on composing new songs for the upcoming Nightwish album in the following months. On August 6, 2014, the band released a statement from drummer Jukka Nevalainen that he would withdraw from the recordings of the upcoming studio album Endless Forms Most Beautiful and the subsequent tour due to severe sleep disorders . The drums on the album were played by Kai Hahto , Wintersun's drummer ; he was also signed for the tour planned for 2015.

On July 15, 2019, the band released a press release announcing Kai Hahto as a new official member of Nightwish. Jukka Nevalainen explains there that, despite an extensive recovery, he will withdraw permanently behind the scenes and remain active in the management of the band.

On January 16, 2020, the band announced that the upcoming ninth studio album had been mixed and mastered. Human. : II: Nature. appeared as announced on April 10, 2020.

style

music

Most of the Nightwish songs were written by the keyboardist Holopainen. Emppu Vuorinen has already contributed a few tracks earlier , he wrote a piece entirely by himself for Dark Passion Play . Marco Hietala also takes part more and more in the songwriting process and wrote, for example, the section Long Lost Love of the track Beauty of the Beast , which comes from the album Century Child . The predominantly acoustic-sounding song The Islander on the album Dark Passion Play also comes from his pen and was originally written for Tarot .

Piano and guitar from Moondance

The musical style was characterized on the older albums by the combination of the classically trained soprano voice of the singer Turunen at the time with strongly keyboard-heavy Power Metal . Corresponding to Power Metal, the vocals, riffs and solos are melodic and oriented towards classical harmony. Typical Power Metal figures of guitar, bass and drums, as in Wishmaster ( audio example from Wishmaster (without keyboards) ? / I ), are overlaid with keyboard sounds. Often within a title, as in the song Moondance , purely acoustic passages change with sections that are more like Metal. An example of the use of classic phrases is the sequencing model from the title Stargazers , which is reminiscent of baroque music and performed by guitar and keyboard . Audio file / audio sample

The debut album deviated from this style a little, among other things, because Turunen had no vocal training. Starting with the album Century Child in 2002, the dominance of the voice increasingly gave way to an opulent orchestration. On Century Child , the band was complemented by an orchestra for the first time, both Once and Dark Passion Play were recorded together with the London Symphony Orchestra . Holopainen confirmed this development in an interview with Once - he doesn't want Once to be "a metal album, [but] that it is a film music album that hides under the mask of heavy metal ." Holopainen also counts film music among his most important Influences. The live DVD From Wishes to Eternity features an instrumental piece in which themes from Crimson Tide and Deep Blue Sea are processed. In the song “Bless the Child” the “Crimson Tide” theme is also quoted again. In another interview, he describes the “bombastic compositions” by Hans Zimmer , James Horner and Danny Elfman as a major influence.

Holopainen's keyboard playing is unusually dominant for metal, in which keyboards are largely only used for subtle accompaniment. With samples of strings and wind instruments, he imitates those composers he sees as role models with rapid chord repetitions and rich orchestration. The VII level of the dominant parallel serves as a dominant in many topics, which creates chord depressions . This style is also widespread in contemporary epic film music. Fast, virtuoso keyboard runs also dominate the early albums, guitar solos are less common. On the albums since Once , Nightwish relies on more complex orchestral arrangements, orchestrated by external musicians such as Pip Williams. The style here is based on late romantics such as Richard Wagner and Antonín Dvořák .

Excerpt from Ever Dream ( Century Child ), antecedent . The style is shaped by the rapid repetitions of chords and the dominant use of the seventh degree (F major). The emphasis of the upper voices on beats 2 and 4 is shifted to the emphasis on the bass line and the electric guitar riff on beats 1, 3 and 4.
Excerpt from Wanderlust ( Wishmaster ), antecedent of the introductory keyboard solo. The broken chords and the fast, virtuoso playing are characteristic of the early Nightwish albums . The solo is doubled in unison with the electric guitar in the first part of the epilogue, the second part is two-part.

In addition to classic and romantic elements, the style of Nightwish occasionally includes folk elements. In line with the original conception of the band, the debut album Angels Fall First contained a suite called Lappi (Finnish for Lapland ) that picked up melodies from traditional Finnish music. On the album Once , the song Creek Mary's Blood works musically and lyrically with the tradition of the Cherokee Indians, The Siren contains influences from Arabic music . On the album Dark Passion Play , the song The Islander and the instrumental piece Last of the Wilds are influenced by Celtic music.

Turunen was often accompanied by male singing. The voice of Holopainen can be heard on some of the tracks on the album Angels Fall First . On Oceanborn , the meanwhile Finntroll singer Tapio Wilska acted as singer on two songs. In the play The Kinslayer from the album Wishmaster Ike Vil comes from Babylon Whores on. Marco Hietala has been taking on male vocals since Century Child , which has gained significantly more space. Turunen's vocal style on Once , which has changed significantly compared to the previous album Century Child, is, according to Holopainen, "a bit easier on the ear, [...] which has also divided the fan base". Nevertheless, two CDs with a high and loud voice are enough, the band wanted to "explore new areas".

Texts

In the beginning, Holopainen wrote mainly on mythological and fantasy subjects, often referring to "metaphysics and nature". Later the lyrics became much more personal. On Wishmaster there is still a “tribute to Tolkien and all the other fantasy authors” with the title track, but at the same time Dead Boy's Poem is a very emotional piece, the Holopainen as his “legacy and [...] testament for the whole world "Looks:" I really wanted to do this song before I die because it tells the whole world what I think and what I feel. It expresses a lot about me. "

The development became even clearer on the Wishmaster successor Century Child . Turunen no longer sees the lyrics "in the dreamland they are used to, but in the tough reality of life." Kuolema Tekee Taiteilijan ( Eng . Death makes the artist ) from Once describes the loss and its influence on art, Nemo is about Being lost. In contrast, Creek Mary's Blood is based on the story of the same name by Dee Brown , in which the situation of the North American natives at the end of the 19th century is described. Dark Passion Play contains one song each about Holopainen's childhood, Turunen and her husband Marcelo Cabuli, many references to Edgar Allan Poe and Stephen King .

On the debut album Angels Fall First there were several tracks in Finnish. The Nightwish lyrics have been in English since the first album, the only exceptions being Kuolema Tekee Taiteilijan from the album Once and the single Erämaan Viimeinen , a text version of the song Last of the Wilds from the album Dark Passion Play . Holopainen was very unsure what This text came up because he finds it difficult to write in Finnish and says that "the Finnish language [can] sound very cheesy very quickly". The song Taikatalvi from the 2011 album "Imaginaerum" is also in Finnish.

References to Finland

Holopainen is strongly inspired by Finland and the Finnish nature. Already on the debut album, Lappi was a four-part suite that - as the name suggests - is dedicated to the nature and history of Lapland . Holopainen would like the choice of the Finnish language for the text by Kuolema Tekee Taiteilijan to be understood as an “homage to the country you come from. We are Finns and we are very proud of that. We have the best fanbase here… so it's a little tribute to Finland. ”Another reason was the exoticism associated with Finnish lyrics. In a later interview, Holopainen sums up Finland's influence on him with these words:

“The music I make would be totally different if I lived anywhere else because the surroundings, for example the forests and lakes, have such a big influence on me. [...] You can judge me by my music; that's all I am. "

- Tuomas Holopainen in August 2005

reception

Marco Hietala in Birmingham (February 15, 2005)

Nightwish is one of the most successful bands in Finland, their single Over the Hills and Far Away from 2001 is number 2 on the all-time best of the Finnish charts, the album Once from 2004 is number 20 in the "Best-of-all-Time" Albums. In Germany Nightwish was also able to achieve some notoriety and place itself at number 1 on the album charts with Once , and later also with Dark Passion Play . The band was also commercially successful, especially in Sweden, Austria, Norway and Switzerland. In the United States and the United Kingdom, however, the band has not achieved any notable chart placement.

Nightwish has inspired many power and symphonic metal musicians. The Epica singer Simone Simons says she heard with a 15 Nightwish CD and then decided to learn classical singing. Nicole Bogner, the former singer of Visions of Atlantis , lists Nightwish as a major influence on the band. Even After Forever referred Nightwish as a "favorite band" and is often compared to Nightwish. The editors of the Rock Hard sees Nightwish as one of the few exceptions among the late 1990s resulting Scandinavian power metal bands who made it, "to give the genre a new impetus or even set accents" on the album Once have the Band the "basic formula of hard metal guitars, pop melodies and Turunen's ingratiating soprano voice [perfected]". For Markus Wosgien, the promotion manager of the Nuclear Blast label , Nightwish were "an absolute dream band [...], their music is unique".

The US magazine Loudwire has Nightwish on its list of the 50 most important metal bands of the 21st century.
