Joseph Michael Bellino (born March  13, 1938 in Winchester , Massachusetts - † March 27, 2019 in Lincoln , Massachusetts) was an American American football player .

He was active from 1958 to 1960 in college football as a halfback for the team of the United States Naval Academy , for which he also played basketball . In his final year, in which he competed with the team after one season with nine wins and one loss at the Orange Bowl , he was awarded the Heisman Trophy and the Maxwell Award as best college football player and was voted All American . He was the first in the history of the Navy Midshipmen and, alongside Roger Staubach, one of two Heisman winners.

In 1961, Joe Bellino was selected by both the Washington Redskins in the 17th round of the National Football League (NFL) draft and by the Boston Patriots in the 19th round of the American Football League (AFL) draft. After completing his training at the Naval Academy, he did four years of military service in the United States Navy and, after switching to reservist service, played three seasons for the Boston Patriots from 1965 to 1967. After the end of his professional career, he worked in the car trade.

Joe Bellino was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1977. His jersey number 27 is no longer awarded in honor of the Navy Midshipmen . In addition, the Joe Bellino Trophy is named after him, which is awarded at the United States Naval Academy to the player of each graduate year who has gained the most yards of space in rush and pass plays in the course of his career . In his hometown of Winchester, Bellino Park has also been named after him since 2004 .

Joe Bellino was married and had a son and a daughter.
