Vincent Frank Testaverde Sr. (* 13. November 1963 in Brooklyn , New York ) is a former American American football poker players at the position of quarterback . He played 21 seasons for seven different teams in the National Football League (NFL), including the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the New York Jets .
Early years
Testaverde went to high school in New York . He later went to the University of Miami between 1983 and 1986. In 1986 he received the Heisman Trophy and was a Consensus All-American . In 2013 he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame .
NFL
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Testaverde was selected in the 1987 NFL Draft as the first player ever by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers . In his first season, he completed six games for the Buccaneers. In his second season of all games, however, it was an underground season with only 13 touchdowns and 35 interceptions . Because of his color blindness , he was partially ridiculed by fans of the Buccaneers. Over the years in Tampa , he improved noticeably. However, he never managed a positive touchdown-interception relationship.
Cleveland Browns / Baltimore Ravens
For the 1993 season he moved to the Cleveland Browns . Initially he was intended as a backup quarterback behind Bernie Kosar , but after his expulsion he became a starter. In 1994 he reached the play-offs with the Browns . In 1995 he threw more touchdowns than interceptions for the first time in his professional career (17:10). After the Browns moved to Baltimore in 1996 and the team was renamed the Baltimore Ravens , he stayed here for two more years. In 1996 he was even nominated for the Pro Bowl for the first time .
New York Jets
For the 1998 season he moved to the New York Jets . Here he was nominated for the Pro Bowl for the second time in his first season. He threw 29 touchdowns and only seven interceptions in the season, he also reached the play-offs with the Jets, where they lost in the AFC Championship Game against the Denver Broncos 10:23. On the first day of the 1999 season , against the New England Patriots , Testaverde suffered an injury to his right Achilles tendon , which is why he was out for the rest of the season. Two years later he reached the play-offs with the Jets again.
Dallas Cowboys
For the 2004 season he moved to the Dallas Cowboys for one season . Here he was initially intended as a backup quarterback for Quincy Carter . However, after he was fired for substance abuse, Testaverde was named a starter. He completed all 16 season games for the Cowboys.
Second stay with the New York Jets
On September 27, 2005 he signed another contract with the New York Jets . He was named a starter by the Jets in the fifth week of the 2005 season . However, he only played four games from the start.
New England Patriots
For the 2006 season Testaverde moved to the New England Patriots . Here he was the backup for Tom Brady . It was only enough for three short assignments.
Carolina Panthers
After both quarterbacks, Jake Delhomme and David Carr , had failed with the Carolina Panthers , the Panthers signed Testaverde on October 14, 2007. On the 13th day of the season, when they beat the San Francisco 49ers , he threw his last touchdown pass in the NFL .
