Nile Kinnick

Nile Clark Kinnick Jr. (born July 9, 1918 in Adel , Iowa , † June 2, 1943 in the Caribbean ) was an American football player . As a running back at the University of Iowa , he won the Heisman Trophy in 1939 . During World War II he served in the US Navy as a pilot on the aircraft carrier USS Lexington . During a practice flight over the Gulf of Paria , Kinnick crashed his plane. In 1989 he was named the best football player in the history of the University of Iowa.

In 1939, Kinnick was honored with the Associated Press' Athlete of the Year award .
