John Patrick Cooke (* 9. April 1937 in Ansonia , Connecticut , United States ; † 26 December 2005 in Ridgefield , Connecticut, United States) was an American rower and Olympic champion and youth - football coach .

Life

He played soccer in high school and began rowing after enrolling at Yale University and was a member of the university's sports team - the Yale Bulldogs . At the age of 19, he won the gold medal in rowing with the US team at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne ( eighth ). He then moved to law school in 1956 and graduated in 1959. After college , he served several years in the United States Marine Corps in Asia . Later he worked for an air freight company , got involved in local politics and worked as a youth soccer coach.
