The first generation was presented at the Mondial de l'Automobile in autumn 2008 . The production of the vehicle based on the three 2008 studies Soul Burner , Soul Diva and Soul Searcher began in November 2008 in South Korea; the market launch in Europe was in February 2009 and in the USA in April 2009. With a relatively short external length, a long wheelbase and a generous height, the vehicle offers space for five people. The luggage compartment volume is 340 liters with the normal seating arrangement and 570 liters with the rear bench seat folded down.
In Europe, a gasoline and a diesel engine, each with a displacement of 1.6 liters and 93 kW / 126 PS (petrol) and 94 kW / 128 PS (diesel) are available . Both front-wheel drive engines are based on engines from the Kia cee'd and have four cylinders, 16 valves and two overhead camshafts in conjunction with manual and automatic transmissions. In the USA and some non-European markets, a 2.0-liter gasoline engine is also offered, which was replaced in summer 2011 by a newer design of the same size .
Facelift
At the end of October 2011 a revised version of Soul was introduced. This model has a wider air intake and enlarged fog lights. The headlights have also been redesigned and now have a black surround. The lower part of the twin headlights now takes on the function of daytime running lights, which were implemented using LEDs in the higher equipment lines. After the facelift, new LED taillights and a black bar in the bumper that stretches across the entire width of the vehicle stand out at the rear. In the interior, the center console has been revised. There is now a round LC display for the air conditioning. On the technical side, a 103 kW / 140 PS 1.6-liter gasoline engine was introduced with the facelift. In addition, the consumption of the diesel engine has been reduced. All transmissions, manual and automatic, now have six stages.

In the spring of 2014, the second generation of the Soul was launched worldwide. The vehicle has grown a bit in its dimensions, only the height has remained roughly the same.
Kia Soul EV
The Kia Soul EV model is a purely electric car . The first prototypes were tested in 2013. In November 2013, the production of the Soul EV model was announced, which was launched in the USA in 2014. It has also been available in Europe since the end of 2014.
The electric motor has an output of 81 kW (110 hp) and a torque of 285 Nm. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 11.7 seconds and has a top speed of 145 km / h. The lithium-ion polymer battery in the Soul EV is based on a development by Samsung and Kia and has a capacity of 27 kWh. The range of the Kia Soul is 212 km. The energy density of the 277 kg battery is 200 Wh / kg. If time is short, 80% can be charged in 33 minutes at a 50 kW fast charging station. Furthermore, the regenerative braking system and the heat pump are used to increase the operating range. In 2017, the electric version accounted for 69% (2933 of 4244 units) of the registered Kia Soul and only 9% (387 units) were fitted with a diesel engine.
The remaining 22% (924 units) are accounted for by the gasoline engines on offer.
Facelift
The Soul was revised for the 2017 model year. In addition to some visual changes, the turbocharged 1.6-liter petrol engine known from the cee'd GT is also used as the top engine. The facelift celebrated its premiere at the 2016 Paris Motor Show .
