The Kia Venga was a car model from the South Korean car manufacturer Kia Motors . This is the brand's first minivan , the production model of which was presented at the IAA 2009 in Frankfurt am Main . On January 29, 2010, the Venga came onto the German market with two petrol and two diesel engines and four equipment lines. Like the Kia cee'd, the vehicle was developed in Europe. It is based on the platform of the Kia Soul and is positioned above the Kia Rio in the manufacturer's model range . The Venga was produced alongside the Hyundai i30 and the technically identical Hyundai ix20 from September 2009 to May 2011 by Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Czech in Nošovice . After that, production was relocated to the Kia Motors Slovakia plant in Žilina , where the cee'd and the Sportage are also built. In summer 2019, the production of the Kia Venga was discontinued without replacement.

Under the internal abbreviation YN , the Venga was developed in the Kia research center in Rüsselsheim and the design was created in the Kia European headquarters in Frankfurt am Main . In the Erlkönig stage , the minivan was still referred to by the media as cee'd Plus , until the Spanish name Venga ( English : Go! Or Come! ) Was finally announced.

The near-series concept vehicle named Kia N ° 3 , which was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2009, provided a preview of the production version .

Production of the series model finally began in September 2009 at the Hyundai plant in Nošovice, Czech Republic. This new joint venture of the Hyundai Kia Automotive Group started mass production in 2008 and is expected to produce 300,000 vehicles per year at maximum capacity and employ around 3500 workers.

technology

The Kia Venga is based on a floor pan that is also used for the Kia Soul and Hyundai i20 , but whose wheelbase has been extended to 2.62 meters for the Venga . The self-supporting body is made of sheet steel and has a drag coefficient of 0.31.

All versions have an electrically assisted rack and pinion power steering as standard . With 2.77 turns of the steering wheel, the Venga has a turning circle of 10.4 meters.

The chassis uses coil springs , gas pressure shock absorbers and stabilizers at the front and rear . At the front there is an independent suspension with a subframe and MacPherson struts and a torsion beam axle at the rear .

The servo-assisted dual-circuit brake system works with ventilated disc brakes with a diameter of 280 mm at the front and with 258 mm brake discs at the rear. The braking system includes a four-channel ABS with EBD , BAS and ESC as standard .

Engines

For selecting four transversely-mounted stand for the model front motors in -line type 16-valve four-cylinder, front-wheel drive . The 1.4 to 1.6 liter engines produce between 55 and 94 kW (75 to 128 hp) depending on the country. All engines have two overhead camshafts driven by a timing chain , meet the Euro 6 emissions standard and can optionally be equipped with the ISG start-stop system . Then these are provided with the EcoDynamics label and also have smooth-running tires, a switching point display and intelligent alternator control.

Transmission:

  • Five-speed manual transmission with single-plate dry clutch (petrol engine and 1.4 CRDi 75)
  • Six-speed manual transmission with single-plate dry clutch (diesel from 1.4 CRDi 90)
  • Four-speed automatic transmission with torque converter lock-up clutch (optional for 1.6 CVVT)

Petrol engines

The two gasoline engines of the " Gamma " series with 1.4 and 1.6 liter displacement are offered in combination with a five-speed manual transmission . A four-speed automatic is also available for the larger engine . The additional designation CVVT stands for continuous variable valve timing , i.e. variable valve control . The CVVT engines are also equipped with intake manifold injection and a contactless ignition system. The exhaust gas cleaning takes place via a regulated three-way catalytic converter .

  • 1.4 l CVVT inline four-cylinder with 1396 cm³ displacement and 66 kW (90 PS)
  • 1.6 l CVVT inline four-cylinder with 1591 cm³ displacement and 92 kW (125 PS)

Diesel engines

Two new common rail - diesel engines "Series U2 " be in the Venga used. These were designed in the Kia research and development center in Rüsselsheim and are manufactured in the Kia plant in Žilina , Slovakia . While the 1.6-liter CRDi is already being offered in the 2009 model of the Kia cee'd, the 1.4-liter diesel is being used for the first time. What both diesels have in common is Bosch common rail injection and a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry (VTG). Power is transmitted via a six-speed manual gearbox; only the 1.4-liter version, which is offered in some countries and has a reduced output of 55 kW, uses a five-speed gearbox. The exhaust gases from the compression ignition are cleaned by a diesel particulate filter.

  • 1.4 l CRDi in-line four-cylinder with 1396 cm³ displacement and 55 kW (75 PS) (not for Germany)
  • 1.4 l CRDi in-line four-cylinder with 1396 cm³ displacement and 66 kW (90 PS)

At the Paris Mondial de l'Automobile in October 2010, the so-called Eco Venga with the 75 HP diesel and special fuel- saving measures from Kia's EcoDynamics package was presented. In this case, this includes the ISG start-stop system , a modified manual transmission, fuel-saving tires and low-viscosity oils. These changes to the vehicle made it possible to reduce the average CO 2 emissions to 114 g / km.

Electric motor

At the Geneva Motor Show in March 2010, Kia presented the Venga EV , a near-series concept vehicle with an 80 kW (109 PS) electric motor . The maximum torque is 280 Nm and the energy is stored in a lithium-ion polymer battery pack. The electric motor drives the front wheels and is located in the engine compartment while the battery with a capacity of 24 kWh is located in the trunk. The battery can be charged to 80 percent within 20 minutes using fast charging. With a normal charging process, the battery is completely filled after eight hours. The Venga EV accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 11.8 seconds and reaches its top speed at 140 km / h. The range of the battery system is around 180 kilometers. The most visually striking feature compared to the production model is the closed radiator grille.

design

Kia N ° 3
Kia N ° 3

The Kia Venga is derived from the Kia N ° 3 study , which was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2009. It adopts the basic design of this concept and has been carried out more conventionally in some areas. The N ° 3 was specially designed for the European market by Gregory Guillaume under the direction of Peter Schreyer at the Kia Design Center Europe in Frankfurt am Main. The name of the car refers to the position of the production vehicle in the Kia model range: in terms of size, the Venga ranks third after Picanto and Rio. The study also presents the new “brand face”, which is characterized by the arrangement and size ratio of three details: a new, trapezoidal radiator grille, large-format and almond-shaped headlights and a more prominent brand logo.

A characteristic feature of the Kia N ° 3 is the large windshield, which merges seamlessly into a panoramic glass roof with a diagonal support beam and automatic sun protection. The study is 4.05 meters long and painted in a matt titanium gray. In contrast, there are glossy white or black design elements and the polished 19-inch alloy wheels with black Y-spokes and all-weather high-speed tires. Black and white applications are also used in the interior. There are also light brown leather seats with a special, stitched surface. There is a large information display in the cockpit, which is controlled via a central operating unit.

Competing products

The biggest competitor of the Kia Venga on the German market is the Opel Meriva . The Honda Jazz , the Citroën C3 Picasso , the Renault Grand Modus and the Nissan Note follow a similar spatial concept with dimensions of four meters .

In a comparison test with Jazz, C3 Picasso, Grand Modus and the Nissan Cube , the Kia Venga was able to achieve first place. The sluggish engine ( 1.4 CVVT ) and the relatively high price were criticized . On the other hand, the extensive equipment, space, user-friendliness and good all-round visibility received praise. The trade magazine Auto, motor und sport wrote in its comparison test with Škoda Roomster and C3 Picasso: "Fame and honor for the best Kia that has ever competed in a comparison test at auto motor und sport." ( Marcus Peters : auto, motor und sport online -Output)

Crash test

At the beginning of March 2010, the Kia Venga received four out of a maximum of five stars in the Euro NCAP crash test, after the conditions for achieving the best rating had previously been increased. Now at least 80 percent safety for adults (previously 75 percent), 75 percent child safety (previously 70 percent) and 40 percent protection for pedestrians must be guaranteed. The Venga was rated as follows: adult protection 79 percent, child protection 66 percent, pedestrian protection 64 percent and safety assistant 71 percent as well as the four stars. However, these were only granted with reservations. In a frontal crash, a faulty bracket on the upper fastening of the seat belt broke, which can lead to the seat rail's mechanism cutting into the belt and, in the worst case, tearing it. Kia had therefore initiated a recall, which affected all 1161 vehicles registered in Europe up to then as well as around 1000 models delivered to dealers. During the repair, a special belt sleeve was fitted and the part at risk of breakage was replaced.

Another Euro NCAP crash test was carried out in November 2010 with the revised model. Kia modified the look of the rear seats to increase child protection and optimized the structure of the front section and the criticized restraint system. This time five stars could be achieved. While the values for pedestrian protection and safety assistants remained the same, occupant protection improved to 89 and child safety to 85 percent.

Registration numbers

Since the market launch up to and including December 2019, a total of 48,072 Kia Venga have been newly registered in the Federal Republic of Germany. From 2011 the number of registrations was constantly falling.

Awards

In December 2009 the Venga won the iF product design award 2010 in the Transportation Design category , which includes automobiles, ships, trains and planes. This prize was awarded on March 2, 2010 at CeBIT in Hanover. This is an award that has been given annually since 1953, for which a total of 2486 products from 16 areas were available in 2010. In addition to the design, criteria such as innovation, processing quality and environmental compatibility were evaluated.

At the beginning of 2010 the Kia Venga received the red dot design award for product design. The prize, which has been awarded by the Design Center North Rhine-Westphalia since 1955, is awarded by a jury of international design experts. In 2010, manufacturers from 57 countries submitted 4252 products. Factors such as functionality, ergonomics and durability also play a role in the assessment.

Together with the Kia Soul , the Venga was nominated for the 2011 Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany .

In a price-performance analysis by the independent market research company EurotaxGlass’s, the Venga performed better than its competitors. Decisive for this are the comparatively low prices and maintenance costs as well as the extensive standard equipment. In addition, there is an increased residual vehicle value - for example due to the seven-year guarantee.

At the end of 2010, Venga received certificates from TÜV Nord for a good ecological balance ( ISO standard 14040 ) and environmentally friendly product design ( ISO standard 14062 ). The former attests to 10.5 percent lower CO 2 emissions than comparable models, based on a life cycle of 150,000 km. This includes the procurement of raw materials, production, use and recycling of the vehicle. The DfE ( Design for Environment ) certificate is based on various measures that Kia has taken to minimize the environmental impact of cars. This includes checking the recyclability using 3D design software, the use of environmentally friendly materials, uncomplicated vehicle dismantling and the shortening of the manufacturing process.
