About this picture

The district of Schleswig was from 1867 to 1974, a county in the Prussian province or the federal state Schleswig-Holstein .

geography

The district was in the north of Schleswig-Holstein. At the beginning of 1974 it bordered clockwise in the north, beginning with the districts of Flensburg-Land , Rendsburg-Eckernförde , Dithmarschen and North Frisia .

history

In the new Prussian province of Schleswig-Holstein that emerged after the German-Danish War of 1864, twenty new districts were formed as part of an administrative structural reform , which remained in their basic structure until the district reform in 1970. When it was founded, the Schleswig district comprised the cities of Schleswig and Friedrichstadt , the spots of Kappeln (1870 city) and Arnis (1934 city), the Gottorf office , the imposed kings Börmerkoog and Meggerkoog, which had been subordinate to this since 1853 , and the aristocrats who had also been under the office since 1853 Goods as well as the Dollrott and partly Toestorf estate, the lands of the St. John's Monastery and the Stapelholm landscape . Most of the new Schleswig district belonged to the Istathesyssel . Then there was the Stapelholm landscape and the historic Krongut Fræzlæt .

On April 26, 1970, the communities Mehlby and Toesdorf from the Flensburg-Land district and Kopperby from the dissolved Eckernförde district were incorporated into the Schleswig district. At the same time, the district gave the community of Langstedt to the district of Flensburg-Land and the city of Friedrichstadt and the communities of Seeth and Drage to the district of North Friesland.

The number of municipalities in the district, which had been 103 in 1939, was reduced to 79 by March 1974 through amalgamations and incorporations.

On March 24, 1974, the Schleswig district was merged with the Flensburg-Land district to form the Schleswig-Flensburg district.
