List of locomotives and railcars of the SNCF
The list of locomotives and railcars of the SNCF includes all locomotives of the Société nationale des chemins de fer français (short SNCF). The SNCF designates its locomotives according to the wheel arrangement and a serial number . This is started with a new 100 or 1000 digit for each series .
Steam locomotives
The development paths for steam locomotives were far more complex in France than in Germany. When designing their locomotives, the four large railway companies P.LM , PO , NORD and EST took completely different paths, depending on the geographic and topographical situation of their network. After their nationalization in 1938, however, the end of the steam traction was already near.
In 1940 and 1941, the engineer André Chapelon converted 25 PO “Pacifics” of the 231 A series into four-coupled machines ( 240 P series ), which at the time were considered the most powerful European steam locomotives. With the one-off 242 A1 , he soon succeeded in making the most powerful steam locomotive ever built in Europe.
The numerically largest series of the SNCF was the series 141 R , which, however, was not made in France. 1323 of these "Mikados" were delivered from the USA and Canada after the Second World War . This series was the determining factor in French train operations in the post-war period. The 141 R 72, the last SNCF steam locomotive, retired on April 4, 1974.
The series numbers of the SNCF steam locomotives consist of two components: a three-digit number and a subsequent letter. The number stands for the wheel alignment ; the first digit indicates the number of front running axles , the second that of the driving wheel sets and the last that of the rear running axles. A 231 is a Pacific with a 2'C1 'wheel arrangement. With the following letter the machines are sorted according to the time of their first handover to the respective railway company . The letters A to N were assigned to locomotives that the SNCF took over from the old railway administration. The letters P to U were assigned to steam locomotives that were newly delivered after their establishment in 1938. X, Y and Z received machines left over after the Second World War as spoils of war ; The letters O and V were not assigned. The letter W denoted locomotives built in Great Britain (140 W and 150 W) which were brought into the country for the transport of military trains in the course of Operation Overlord .
The respective serial number was usually adopted from the predecessor company. Numbers plus hyphen in front of lists did not appear in the addresses of the locomotives; they only indicated the region of operation, which could change if the home was changed.

Electric locomotives
DC locomotives for 1500 V
Types of predecessor railways as well as their replicas and conversions
As a result of the coal shortage that developed during the First World War , the electrification of lines began in the early 1920s. The leading railway companies were PO and Midi , who electrified their main and some branch lines with 1500 V DC and overhead lines and merged them to form PO-Midi in 1934 . The PLM equipped its Culoz – Modane railway line in the Alps with a lateral conductor rail . Lines of the western Parisian suburban network operated by ETAT were also electrified from 1924 with 1500 V DC voltage and power supply by means of a conductor rail.
For strategic military reasons, however, the electrification of the NORD and EST lines was not carried out. When the SNCF was founded, steam was also in operation on the major Paris-Lyon-Marseille highway , which connects the three largest French cities.

Diesel locomotives
In the year the large private railways were nationalized, diesel traction was hardly developed. The PLM had announced a competition in 1930, which resulted in four prototypes and a small series ( 4 DMD , later BB 60031–60033 of the SNCF). In 1937 and 1938 two articulated locomotives were added; When the 262 AD was delivered, the PLM had already been incorporated into the SNCF.
In 1931/1932, ETAT purchased 17 small locomotives for shunting services, which were incorporated into the SNCF's inventory and ran there as the YY 60210 series .
