List of show caves in Germany
The list of show caves in Germany contains all show caves in Germany that are listed as show caves by the Association of German Cave and Karst Researchers . A show cave is a natural, subterranean cavity that has been expanded for visitor traffic, can usually be accessed on paths and stairs and is equipped with lighting. Show caves are chargeable and have regular opening times, usually with regular tours of 30 to 45 minutes. Except for two, they are electrically illuminated. Only in the Easter cave and in the Schellenberger ice cave are flashlights , respectivelyCarbide lamps used. The Olgahöhle was the first German show cave to have electric lighting in 1884, making it second in the world, only the Kraushöhle in Styria was electrically lit in 1883. The number of visitors to the show caves per year is around two million, with the Atta cave with around 150,000 to 200,000 and the devil 's cave near Pottenstein with 148,400 visitors being the most popular.
In Germany there are 50 show caves: The oldest operating with guide is the Baumannshöhle in Rübeland that already Johann Wolfgang von Goethe visited. Organized cave tours were held there as early as 1646. The last to be opened as a show cave in 2009 was the autumn maze. More than half of the show caves are stalactite caves . The Wimsener Höhle is the only show cave in Germany that can be navigated by boat over a length of 70 meters. The Goetz Cave is the only German crevasse and crevasse cave permitted for visitors and the largest accessible cave in Europe . The Laichinger Tiefenhöhle is the only shaft cave that can be visited in Germany, with a depth of 55 meters below the entrance, which is the deepest point in a German show cave. The Schellenberger ice cave is the only fully developed ice cave in Germany. In the Barbarossa cave in the anhydrite rock, layers of gypsum like wallpaper hang from the ceilings and walls.
