Luca Cunti (born July 4, 1989 in Zurich ) is a Swiss ice hockey player who has been under contract with EHC Biel from the Swiss National League since 2019 . Luca Cunti is a nephew of the former EHC Arosa and SC Bern player Pietro Cunti .

Career

Luca Cunti was considered a great ice hockey talent from an early age. In the 2007 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected in the third round by the Tampa Bay Lightning . However, his further career was initially mixed and he gained a reputation as an eternal and difficult to manage talent. The first division clubs EHC Dübendorf and EHC Weinfelden were his first positions, later the NLB clubs HC Thurgau and GCK Lions . In the National League A he stayed with the SCL Tigers only average. It was not until the 2011/12 season that Cunti, under the leadership of Bob Hartley, made his breakthrough with the ZSC Lions and with them achieved the Swiss championship title as promoted of the year . From the 2012/13 season onwards, Cunti was one of the leading players in the Lions, winning another league title in 2014 and the Swiss Cup in 2016. In the 2016/17 season, after which his contract with the Lions expired, he was used irregularly by the Lions coach. At the beginning of December 2016, Cunti signed a contract with HC Lugano, which was valid from summer 2017. As a result, HC Lugano tried to borrow Cunti until the end of the 2016/17 season, but ultimately the Lions management decided on a loan deal with EHC Kloten .

Between 2017 and 2019, Cunti was under contract with HC Lugano and reached the playoff final with the Ticino team in 2018. He missed most of the following season due to an injury. In December 2018 he received a two-year contract with EHC Biel , which was valid from the 2019/20 season.

International

Cunti's debut did not go smoothly internationally either. In spring 2012 he had to cancel preparations for the World Cup due to a knee injury and in November 2012 a shoulder injury prevented him from playing at the Germany Cup . He played his first game for Switzerland on December 14, 2012 on the occasion of the Arosa Challenge in his town of Arosa . The next day he scored his first scorer points in an international match at the same tournament.

At the 2013 World Cup in Stockholm and Helsinki he was again part of the national team and won the silver medal with it.
