In 1977 he won the UEFA Cup with Juventus and was appointed to the squad for the 1978 World Cup in Argentina by national coach Enzo Bearzot after making his debut for the Italian national team in 1976 . Since the World Cup tournament in Argentina, in which the Italian team finished fourth, Tardelli has been part of the national team. He played at the 1980 European Football Championship in Italy and was world champion at the 1982 World Cup in Spain . In the final against Germany he scored the 2-0 goal for Italy in the 69th minute.
In 1984 Tardelli won the European Cup Winners 'Cup with Juventus and in 1985 the European Champions' Cup in the final at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels against Liverpool FC . He had won all the European cups with it. After this success, he moved to Inter Milan and drove again with Italy to the 1986 World Cup in Mexico . However, his team was eliminated against France in the round of 16; Tardelli was no longer used by Bearzot in this tournament. He had played his last and 81st international match in 1985.
In 1987 he moved from Inter to the Swiss league for FC St. Gallen , where he ended his career in 1988.

Tardelli worked as a coach for AC Cesena , the Italian U-21 national team (until October 2000), Inter Milan (October 2000 to June 2001) and AS Bari (December 2002 to November 2003), among others . From March 2004 to October 2004 Tardelli was the coach of the Egyptian national team .
From July 2006 to June 2007 he was responsible for sporting matters on the board of Juventus Turin . From February 2008 to September 2013 he worked under Giovanni Trapattoni as assistant coach of the Irish national team .
