Pietro Vierchowod (born April 6, 1959 in Calcinate ( BG ), Italy ) is a former Italian football player and current coach .

During his playing career he was a defensive specialist. Because of his Ukrainian ancestors, he was also called Lo Zar (German: the Tsar ). Vierchowod later became a coach and last coached the Hungarian first division team Honvéd Budapest in 2014 .

Player career

In the club

Pietro Vierchowod, son of a soldier of the Red Army , began his football career at the US Romanese in Romano di Lombardia in the Series D . He then played for Como Calcio , with the club he managed the feat to rise for two consecutive years: 1978/79 from Serie C1 to Serie B and 1979/80 in the Serie A . After a year-long stint at Fiorentina , he moved to AS Roma in the summer of 1982 and won the Italian championship there in the 1982/83 season . For the 1983/84 season he went to Sampdoria Genoa , where he played until the summer of 1995, in the most successful era of this club, a championship title, three times the Coppa Italia and in 1990 the European Cup Winners' Cup . In the summer of 1995, Pietro Vierchowod moved to Juventus Turin , became a regular player there at the age of 36 and won the Champions League with Juve in the 1995/96 season . At the beginning of the 1996/97 season Vierchowod went to AC Perugia , but after a few weeks he left for AC Milan . From 1997 to 2000 he played for Piacenza Calcio , where he finally ended his career at the age of 41.

Pietro Vierchowod played 562 games in Serie A over the course of his career, only Paolo Maldini and Dino Zoff completed more games .

In the national team

For the Italian national team Vierchowod completed 45 games and scored two goals. He made his debut on January 6, 1981 against the Netherlands and played his last international match on May 1, 1993 against Switzerland .

Vierchowod took part in a total of three world championships, in 1982 in Spain , when he remained without a mission and still became world champion under Enzo Bearzot , in 1986 in Mexico and in 1990 in his own country.

Pietro Vierchowod was until 2008 when Christian Panucci replaced him, the oldest player to ever score an international goal for the Squadra Azzurra . He scored on March 24, 1993 at the age of 33 years, 11 months and 18 days in a 6-1 win against Malta .

Coaching career

After his active career, Pietro Vierchowod coached Catania Calcio in Serie C1 in the 2001/02 season and then AC Florence (then Florentia Viola). He looked after Florentia as an interim coach in the most difficult time of the club, immediately after the forced financial relegation to Serie C2 at the beginning of the 2002/03 season. On September 13, 2005, he hired as a coach at US Triestina in Serie B , but was released in December of the same year. Overall, his previous coaching career, in contrast to his playing career, was not a good star: in all cases he was given notice before the end of the first season. In 2014 Vierchowod was active again as a coach after a break of almost ten years; he signed with Honvéd Budapest in Hungary , but was released after the start of the season in October of that year.
