history

During the civil war between FRETILIN and UDT in 1975 there was fighting in Maulau. The residents of Maulau had split into supporters of the two political camps. As early as September 1974 FRETILIN supporters had migrated to the neighboring Turiscai. In January 1975, the conflict between the groups at the traditional Thanksgiving ceremony intensified. In August 1975, a FRETILIN leader incited further enmity during speeches in neighboring Turiscai and Lequidoe. He called on his supporters to "remove the thorns in Lumo-Luli". As a result, on August 7, 1975, FRETILIN units from Lequidoe and Turiscai attacked the Aldeias Maleria, Lumo-Luli and Ussululi. Between 10 and 25 people were killed by the FRETILIN fighters. Around 675 houses were burned down, livestock stolen or killed. The supporters of the UDT fled to Maubisse, leaving behind children and old people.

On August 11th, 30 UDT fighters arrived from Ermera. They were attacked on August 14th by FRETILIN supporters from Turiscai in Laca-Mali-Cau. Eight houses were burned down. Finally, the FRETILIN leader Januaryio Soares called for the end of the fighting: “There are no more parties, everyone belongs to the Marine People's Party ( FRETILIN ). There will be no more killing. ” At this point, 37 people, mostly UDT supporters, had died.
