Miguel Illescas Córdoba (born December 3, 1965 in Barcelona ) is a leading Spanish chess master .

Life

Illescas Córdoba, a computer scientist by profession , decided early on to pursue a professional chess career . In 1987 and 1988 he won in Las Palmas , in 1988 he gave the FIDE the Grandmaster title . In 1991/92 he won together with Leonid Judassin in Pamplona . In 1992 he came in second place after Boris Gulko in León and third in Chalkidiki after Wladimir Kramnik and Joël Lautier . This year his rating exceeded 2600 points for the first time, setting a Spanish record. In 1993 he was in Wijk aan Zee , which was played for the first and only time in the knockout system , second after a 1: 2 (+0 = 2 −1) final defeat against Anatoli Karpow . In the same year he won the zone tournament in Lisbon and qualified for the interzonal tournament in Biel , also played a match against Ljubomir Ljubojević 4: 4 (+0 = 8 −0) in Linares . In 1995 Illescas Córdoba won the Linares zone tournament ahead of Tony Miles and was the first Spanish champion ; In 1998 (tied with Francisco Vallejo Pons ), 1999, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2010 he repeated this success. In 1996 he shared first and second place with Wesselin Topalow in Madrid , 1997/98 he won together with Ulf Andersson in Pamplona. In 2003/04 he won again in Pamplona with Luke McShane and Emil Sutovsky . Since 1986 he has regularly represented Spain at the Chess Olympiads .

Illescas Córdoba was a second of Vladimir Kramnik several times : 2000 in his successful world championship fight against Garry Kasparow in London , in 2004 in the duel against Péter Lékó and in 2006 in the reunification match against Wesselin Topalow. He has also been a FIDE Senior Trainer since 2004 .

In February 2015 he is in fourth place in the Spanish ranking, which he led in 1987 and from 1989 to 1994.

National team

Illescas Córdoba took part in twelve Chess Olympiads with the Spanish national team between 1986 and 2014 , with the third best individual result on the third board in Turin in 2006 . He has also competed in all eight European team championships since 1999 .

In the German federal chess league he played for SV Empor Berlin in the 1996/97 season . Later he was registered with SG 1868-Aljechin Solingen and SG Porz , but was not used. In France he played with Montpellier Echecs until 2003 .
