Francisco Vallejo Pons (born August 21, 1982 in Es Castell on Menorca ) is a Spanish chess player .

Life

Francisco Vallejo learned the rules of chess when he was five. He was quickly regarded as one of the most promising talents in Spain and took part in numerous international youth championships: He came second at the U10 World Youth Championship in 1991 in Mamaia , second at the U10 European Championship in Warsaw in 1992, and shared third (with Étienne Bacrot ) in the U10 -WM 1992 in Duisburg , second at the U12 World Cup in 1993 in Bratislava and shared third (with Ruslan Ponomarjow ) at the U12 World Cup in Szeged 1994.

In 1998 he won the Spanish Championship in Linares together with Miguel Illescas Córdoba and was named International Master by FIDE in the same year , and Grand Master in 1999 at the age of 16 years and 9 months . In 2000 he was second in the European Youth Championships U20 in Avilés and Youth World Champion U18 in Oropesa del Mar . That year he won the Mallorca Open and played for the first time in the Spanish national team at the Chess Olympiad in Istanbul . In 2001 he won the Capablanca Memorial in Havana and in the same year played in Mondariz against the Bosnian Ivan Sokolov 4: 4 (+1 = 6 −1).

In 2002 he played for the first time at the world elite tournament in Linares , which was won by Garry Kasparov . He also won this year in Dos Hermanas and was second behind Alexei Schirow, who was elected from Spain , at the Spanish Championship held in Ayamonte . In 2004 he defeated Viktor Korchnoi in a competition in Vera (Spain) with 3.5: 2.5 (+2 = 3 −1). At the 2005 World Chess Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk , he was twelfth. With the Spanish national team, Vallejo took part in the Chess Olympiads in 2000 , 2002 , 2004 , 2006 , 2008 , 2010 , 2012 , 2014 and 2016 and achieved the second-best individual result on the second board in Dresden in 2008 . He also represented Spain at the European Team Championships in 2001, 2003, 2007, 2009, 2011 , 2013 and 2015, he achieved the best result in 2003 and the second best result on the second board in 2007.
