Modern Family is an American mockumentary - comedy , the first American US on September 23, 2009 TV channel ABC ran. The twenty-minute series, created by Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan , was produced by Fox Television Studios . The program deals with the families of Jay Pritchett, his son Mitchell Pritchett and his daughter Claire Dunphy.

The eleventh season of the series, which will air in the US in the 2019/2020 television season, has been announced by ABC as the final season. The last episode aired on April 8, 2020. The German-language first broadcast of the final season is still pending.

action

The mockumentary accompanies the families of Jay Pritchett ( Ed O'Neill ), his daughter Claire Dunphy ( Julie Bowen ) and his son Mitchell Pritchett ( Jesse Tyler Ferguson ) from Los Angeles County . While Claire is the housewife in a classic family, Jay is married to his much younger wife Gloria ( Sofía Vergara ), with whom he is raising his stepson Manny ( Rico Rodriguez ), in his second marriage . Mitchell and his significant other Cameron ( Eric Stonestreet ) have adopted a Vietnamese baby named Lily ( Aubrey Anderson-Emmons ). Claire, on the other hand, lives in her family with her husband Phil ( Ty Burrell ) and their three children: Haley ( Sarah Hyland ), who is pretty but not particularly smart, Alex ( Ariel Winter ), who, unlike her sister, is extremely intelligent , and their son Luke ( Nolan Gould ), who is often viewed as a bit stupid.

production

After the pilot did very well in a target group test, ABC ordered thirteen episodes and added them to the schedule for 2009/2010. The series received a full season of 24 episodes on October 8, 2009. On January 12, 2010, ABC ordered a second season of Modern Family, which aired on September 22, 2010. While the extension for a third season took place in January 2011, ABC announced the production of a fourth season in May 2012. Finally, in May 2013, the series was also extended for a fifth season.

Towards the end of July 2012, a part of the "Modern Family" ensemble, namely Julie Bowen , Sofía Vergara , Eric Stonestreet , Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Ty Burrell , sued the production company 20th Century Fox Television, because the existing contracts the maximum contract duration valid under California law exceeded seven years. The real reason for the lawsuit was the failed negotiations about the actors' fees. The lawsuit was withdrawn a few days later, as the production company and actors agreed on new, higher fees.

While the interior shots of the series are recorded at 20th Century Studios, the exterior shots are taken from single-family homes in Los Angeles, which are used for the series.

The Delgado-Pritchett family

Jay Pritchett

Jay is the patriarch of the family and the father of Claire and Mitchell. He is also married to Gloria in his second marriage and is Manny's stepfather. He is the head of a company that makes cupboards and belongs to the upper class. He drives a Porsche, Mercedes and Audi, is mostly only at home and emotionally closed (only under duress does he tell his son that he loves him). He often finds it difficult to deal with expressions of affection from his family, but is sometimes very touched. His rather conservative image of men made it difficult for him to deal openly with his son Mitchell's homosexuality. He has had a good relationship with his daughter Claire right from the start.

Gloria Delgado-Pritchett

Gloria is Jay's much younger wife and Manny's mother. She is handsome and very spirited. She comes from Colombia and attaches great importance to her ethnic origin. Through her upbringing, she wants to ensure that her son Manny does not forget this. Furthermore, she attaches great importance to her external appearance, which is reflected in her sometimes extravagant clothing style. However, unlike the rest of the family, she is a very devout woman who regularly attends church.

Manny (Manuel) Delgado

Manny is Gloria's son from a previous marriage. His behavior is usually very adult and he often amazes older people with his serenity. He often drinks espresso, even though he doesn't like it at all and just wants to look adult. He does not shy away from trying to flirt with adult women, but does not have the hoped-for success. His intelligence and knowledge are in contrast to his often childlike behavior. For example, he's afraid of monsters and butterflies.

Joe Pritchett

Fulgencio Joseph is Jay and Gloria's son. Gloria said in the last episode of the third season that she was pregnant, Joe was born in the twelfth episode of the fourth season. In the episode “A beginner is not a master”, Fulgencio Joseph learned to walk.

Stella

She is the dog in the house and is groomed and pampered by Jay, which Gloria doesn't particularly like. In episode 22 of season 2, they take on Stella. In the episode "Peace, Joy, Family Photo" Jay goes to a dog run / beauty contest with her.

The Dunphy family

Claire Dunphy

Claire is the daughter of Jay and the caring mother of the Dunphy family. She is a full-time mother and housewife. There are often allusions to her youth, when she was anything but a good daughter. Claire is very quick-tempered by her nature, is considered a perfectionist in the family and cooks inside - sometimes openly - when something does not go according to her expectations. Sometimes it can be seen that she would like to go back to work. In the meantime she is aiming for a place in the city council , but does not receive enough votes. Later in the series, she starts working for her father's closet company, who wants to build her up as his successor.

Phil Dunphy

Phil is Claire's husband, who calls himself cool dad . He doesn't see himself in the classic father role, but tries - mostly unsuccessfully - to be his children's cool buddy. However, he has a difficult relationship with his father-in-law because he did not approve of the marriage. Phil is always trying to get recognition from Jay. Over the course of the series, he gradually succeeds and the two get closer and closer. He is in need of harmony and usually overwhelmed with outbursts of anger from his wife. In his school days he was with the cheerleaders, he is also a passionate trampoline jumper and hobby magician . Professionally, he also works very passionately as a real estate agent. Phil can show almost childlike enthusiasm for unusual technical things, for example a remote-controlled gutter cleaner or when he and Luke tries to develop an automatic pancake turner. Every now and then he breaks his own rules or those that he made with Claire. Luke can be called his favorite child, even if it is always clear how much he cares about his daughters. To the chagrin of his wife, he regularly did nonsense with Luke and it was obvious to him that this became more sensible over time. He has an excellent relationship with his own father, who is also foolish.

Haley Dunphy

Haley is the eldest daughter of Claire and Phil, who had her first experiences with boys when she was nine years old. Her style of clothing is always very provocative, which particularly displeases her mother. As she grows up, she not only offends her parents and grandfather with her clothing style, but also with her behavior, especially when it comes to parties and boys. At school, she only performs below average. She is in a relationship with the musician Dylan if they haven't separated again. However, in the sixth season more and more something is on the way with Andy (Joe's babysitter), in the seventh season this impression is confirmed. In season ten, she marries Dylan and has twins, a girl and a boy.

Alex Dunphy

Alex is the second daughter of Claire and Phil. Unlike Haley, school is very important to her. For example, she would rather study than attend a Halloween party. Accordingly, she always stands out in school for her extraordinarily good performance. Alex also has a dark sense of humor, is precocious, and is often open about what she thinks of her family, especially her siblings. Her often nerdy-looking nature makes it difficult for her to make friends.

Luke Dunphy

Luke is the son and youngest child of Claire and Phil. Luke is playful, a little clumsy and often lost in his own thoughts. His mother Claire is happy that at least one of her children seems to need her help and care. He is allergic to soy , as you can see in the episode "Haley's Short Career".

Dylan Marshall

Dylan is Haley's boyfriend. The two go through phases, often separate and come back together again and again. In season 10, Dylan and Haley get married and have twins, a girl and a boy.

The Tucker-Pritchett family

Mitchell Pritchett

Mitchell is Jay's gay son who and his partner Cameron adopted a baby from Vietnam at the beginning of the series . He is the family's lawyer and breadwinner. At home he is a loving father who, unlike Cameron, also wants to promote the child's independence. At one point he even physically prevents Cameron from looking at their daughter every time they cry. He doesn't think much of exchanging endearments in public. However, he attaches great importance to publicly acknowledging his partner Cameron and thus also his homosexuality. It is important to him to be accepted as a gay son by his father Jay; He reacts irritably to Jay's attempts to cover up his son's homosexuality. He fulfills some stereotypes. He is a fan of Lady Gaga and has no handicraft skills and cannot throw or catch a ball.

Cameron Tucker

Cameron is Mitchell's life partner. He grew up on a farm in Missouri . He is actually a music teacher, but has largely given up his work to devote himself entirely to Lily's upbringing. Lily is everything next to Mitchell. He is very caring and just spends the whole day with her, which sometimes ends in abstruse disguises. Much to Mitchell's displeasure, he pampers the child very much. Cameron also fulfills some stereotypes, but completely different from his partner Mitchell. He aptly describes himself as a “diva” or “drama queen” and has a penchant for the theatrical . On the other hand, he shows a great interest in sports, also played on the football team at the University of Illinois and is a lot more skilled than Mitchell. Cameron completed a classic clown training and likes to appear as the clown "Fizbo" on children's birthday parties. He is also employed as a high school football coach later in the series.

Lily

Lily is the Vietnamese adopted daughter of Cameron and Mitchell. She is very cared for and pampered with gifts like a princess castle in the garden. Like her cousin Alex, she is exceptionally intelligent and has both pronounced and pointed sarcasm.

Larry

Larry is the hangover that Mitchell and Cameron get in the first episode of the fourth season at Lily's urgent request.

Cast and dubbing

The German dubbing is done by the dubbing company Arena Synchron GmbH in Berlin . Marius Clarén writes the dialogue books together with Eva Schaaf, Frank-Michael Helmke, Kim Hasper and Matthias von Stegmann and directs the dialogue with Schaaf, Hasper and von Stegmann.
