Neumarkt in Steiermark is a former market town with 1713 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2016) in the judicial district or district of Murau in Styria .

As part of the municipal structural reform in Styria , it has been merged with the municipalities of Dürnstein in Styria , Kulm am Zirbitz , Mariahof , Perchau am Sattel , Sankt Marein bei Neumarkt and Zeutschach since 2015 ; the new municipality has the new name Marktgemeinde Neumarkt in Styria . The basis for this is the Styrian Municipal Structural Reform Act - StGsrG . A complaint brought by the municipality against the amalgamation to the Constitutional Court was unsuccessful.

geography

Geographical location

Neumarkt is 845 m above sea level in a high valley between the Seetal Alps in the east and the Grebenzen in the west.

history

The oldest finds in today's Neumarkt municipal area indicate a settlement as early as the 4th millennium BC. Chr. In pre-Christian times, one of the most important connecting roads between Italy and the Danube ran here, and finds from Roman times such as a milestone from 324 attest to the close connection to Italy.

The parish church of Neumarkt was built at the end of the 12th century. The oldest written mention of the village of Neumarkt comes from the year 1235.

In 1849/50 the political community Neumarkt was established.

The reconstruction of the market square was carried out in 2003 and 2004 (complete renewal of the sewer water supply, the electrics and surface design on the main square). The big old chestnut trees were removed because they were sick and replaced with new trees. In addition, the entire park was renewed. The sidewalks have been repaved and lights have been built into the ground to provide a better overview at night. In spring 2011 the new fire station of the Neumarkt volunteer fire brigade was completed and inaugurated with a large three-day tent festival.

Population development

According to the 2001 census, the municipality had 1925 inhabitants, 97.7% of the population had Austrian citizenship. 88.0% of the population professed to be part of the Roman Catholic Church, 3.4% belonged to the Protestant Church, and 6.4% were without religious beliefs.

The population has remained almost unchanged since 1951 (1888).
