Those of the four ball sports baseball, basketball, soccer and volleyball are covered in the related articles Audio file / audio sample

This article deals with the other departments of the club, such as (among others) water polo , table tennis , weight lifting , boxing , athletics , cycling or wrestling . The Athens- based association was founded in 1908. The coat of arms includes a (green) three- leaf clover . Representatives of the club have already won 532 national and international titles - more than any other club in Greece or Europe.

history

The young Giorgos Kalafatis gathered around 40 athletes in Athens in the autumn of 1908 in order to found a sports club. This should also offer football , which had not succeeded in other clubs at that time, as the society at that time could not gain anything from football. The newly founded club was called Podosferikos Omilos Athinon (POA) and is the forerunner of today's football club.

The first president of the newly founded club was Alexandros Kalafatis , who was the older brother of Giorgos, who took the position of coach and captain of the team. In 1910 the association was renamed Panellinios Podosferikos Omilos (PPO), before it changed its name again just eight years later in 1918 and was now called Panellinios Podosferikos kai Agonistikos Omilos (PPAO). In the meantime, three of its greatest athletes in its history have joined the club. Apostolos Nikolaidis , Loukas Panourgias and Michalis Papazoglou began their club membership as athletes, before they later directed the fortunes of PAO as its president for more than half a century. In 1918, in addition to the renaming, it was decided to change the club's colors. If the players were still in red and white up to this point, it was from then on the color green that characterized the appearance of Panathinaikos to this day. At the same time, the three-leaf clover was introduced as an emblem by Michalis Papazoglou.

In 1919 Giorgos Kalafatis traveled to Paris to take part in sports competitions as a member of the Greek national team. On his way home, in addition to the first professional soccer jerseys, he brought the rules for basketball and volleyball with him. Thus Panathinaikos became the first Greek club to include these sports in its offer.

In 1921, the city of Athens handed over to the association the site on which the Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium is now located. While more and more sports departments were founded here and the stadium was expanded, the last, and still valid, renaming of the club to its current name Panathinaikos Athlitikos Omilos (PAO) took place on May 15, 1924 .

Panathinaikos in the media

In the Greek mass media , Panathinaikos Athens is represented as well as hardly any other Greek team. In addition to the four sports newspapers Athlitiki Icho , Derby , Prasinos Tipos and I Prasini , which appear daily, pursue the interests of the club and support its policies, the Prasinos Palmos magazine is broadcast once a week on the private broadcaster High TV . In the approximately two-hour broadcast, topics are dealt with in the various departments of the association. In addition, the Green Web fans broadcast a radio program once a week over the Internet .

The men's basketball, soccer and volleyball games are all televised. The league games in basketball and volleyball as well as the European cup games in volleyball and football are offered on free television. Pay-TV is required for the football league games and the ULEB Euroleague basketball games . In addition, a number of women's volleyball games are broadcast on public television.

Fan scene

View of the west curve with the legendary Gate 13

Panathinaikos was the first club in Greece to have an organized fan base. In 1966 a group of young Panathinaikos fans founded the so-called Gate 13 . The aim was to make it easier to get tickets for games and to prevent opposing supporters from infiltrating their own fan scene. The name was based on the entrance that the audience used to get to the block of the same name on the west stand of the local Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium .

Gate 13 was very well organized and continued to develop in the following years, not least thanks to the European cup successes of the soccer team. In addition to Gate 13, there were also other fan clubs, which mainly used the designation of their respective district for their names.

A prominent point in the history of PAO's fan scene was the 80s. As there were riots at football games in Greece in previous years, the club president at the time, Georgios Vardinogiannis, decided to dissolve and ban the various groups at Gate 13 Place this to found the so-called PA.LE.FI.P. From then on, this was the only fan group officially recognized by the club. Part of the scene opposed this policy and acted again under the name Gate 13 from 1986 . At this time the Green Club was founded, but was renamed Green Cockneys Club shortly afterwards . The Mad Boys were founded in 1988 and the Zografou fan club in 1991 . In 1993 these then merged under the name Athens Fans , before the Mad Boys split off again in 1995. In 1997 the club's management tried for the last time to smash all fan groups except for PA.LE.FI.P, but this time too this attempt was unsuccessful. Thus Gate 13 still exists today and dominates the scene in the Panathinaikos fan scene through its appearance and choreography.

There are currently around 40 Panathinaikos fan clubs in Athens, with membership ranging between 60 and 700. There are a total of 7,000 members in the city of Athens alone. In the rest of Greece there are another 50 fan clubs. Most of these clubs have their own premises, which are maintained through membership fees and the sale of merchandise items. Most of the members come from the district in which the fan club is located.

anthem

Panathinaikos hymn comes from Georgios Mouzakis (* August 15, 1922, † August 27, 2005) from 1958. Georgios Ikonomidis wrote the text.

There is no team as big as you,
there is no other team as dynamic.
And thousands of followers, as soon as they see the shamrock,
cheer "long live Panathinaikos"

Panathinaikos, Panathinaikos,
Panathinaikos you great and glorious.
Panathinaikos, Panathinaikos,
eternal master of all sports.

You were honored by your famous stars,
who are all heroes with big hearts.
The whole of Greece is happy to have such a club that
always has the keys to victory

Panathinaikos, Panathinaikos,
Panathinaikos you great and glorious.
Panathinaikos, Panathinaikos,

history

Entrance to the swimming pool below Gate 13

Panathinaiko's water polo division was founded in 1933 but had to cease operations three years later. The reason for this was the lack of a swimming pool suitable for playing and training. In 1950, the association began building its own swimming pool on the Leoforos Alexandras , which is still located below the western curve of the Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium .

A renewed start of all activities of the water polo department came in 1959 with the participation of the club in the third Greek league. In the following seasons Panathinaikos always secured promotion to the division above, so that the club was again represented in the highest Greek league from 1962.

In the following years Panathinaikos managed to establish itself in the national top and reached third place in the championship in 1963, 1966, 1967, 1971, 1972, 1973 and 1974. After a brief relegation to the second division, Panathinaikos reached third place again in 2011 and subsequently qualified for the LEN Champions League for the first time . There the club managed to survive the first qualifying round and qualify for the first group stage. After the club was eliminated from the current competition as the bottom of the table in the second group stage, it took part in the LEN Euro Cup. In the Euro Cup Panathinaikos reached the round of 16 where he was finally eliminated after two games and a total of 20-21 goals against local rivals Panionios Athens .

In 2015 Panathinaikos reached the runner-up championship and thus his greatest national success. In the same season the club reached the final of the Greek club cup for the first time. The best results Panathinaikos had before were the semi-finals in 1984, 1985, 2002, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. Although the Panathinaikos water polo department is one of the most historic of the club, it has not yet won a title.
