The Portuguese national rugby union team represents Portugal internationally in the sport of rugby union . It is the World Association International Rugby Board (IRB) in the third strength class (third tier) divided. Nine years after the founding of the Federação Portuguesa de Rugby association , the first international match was played in 1935. The Portuguese surprisingly won the European Championship 2002-2004 and qualified for the first time in 2007 for the World Championship . The team's nickname is Os Lobos ("the wolves").

history

Rugby was introduced to Portugal at the beginning of the 20th century by French and English traders who started different teams there. But the sport could not prevail. The reasons were the economic and social problems after the establishment of the republic, the First World War and the dominance of football . In 1926 the Portuguese Rugby Federation was founded and nine years later the first international match took place against Spain , which the Portuguese lost 5-6.

Until 1965, the Portuguese only played three international matches, each of which ended in defeat against Spain. It was not until the mid-1960s that there were regular international encounters, and in 1967 the wolves celebrated their first victory against Spain. After a series of mediocre results, the Portuguese achieved five wins in a row between 1979 and 1981. In 1984 and 1985 they managed to remain unbeaten seven times in a row.

In qualifying for the World Cup in 1991 and 1995, the Portuguese failed in the preliminary rounds. In 1999 they reached the Barrage , but were eliminated against Uruguay in the fight for one of the last two starting places with a total score of 33:79. In 2003 they also missed the qualification in the third round due to the poorer points relationship with Spain. At the 2003/04 European Rugby Championship , Portugal lost only one of ten games in Division 1 and surprisingly became European champions ahead of the big favorites Romania .

At the European Championship 2004-06 it was enough for third place behind Romania and Georgia . This tournament also counted as Round 4 of qualifying for the 2007 World Cup . Portugal finished round 5 as second in the group and lost the Europe barrage to Georgia. In the second barrage, the Portuguese prevailed against Morocco . With an extremely narrow success in the final barrage against Uruguay (total score 24:23) they made it into the World Cup finals for the first time.

The 2011 World Cup was just missed, as they came in 4th place in Division 1A in the European Nations Cup 2008-2010 and only missed 3rd place by two points in the table. The third of the group, Romania played against Ukraine in the play-off for the starting place Europe 3. In the European Nations Cup 2012-2014 Portugal played again in division 1A, finished 5th and thus missed the qualification for the 2015 World Cup .
