Riding Stadium Riem (2014)

The Reitstadion Riem , also known as the Olympia-Reitstadion , is a riding stadium in Munich - Riem . It was built in 1972 for the Summer Olympics that year. After the main grandstand was dilapidated by storms in 1984, no major equestrian events took place here; Concerts continued, however. In 2008 the dilapidated main grandstand was demolished. In 2012, concerts were banned for safety reasons; it is still available for equestrian sports.

Location and connection

The stadium is located east ofschichtlstrasse , from where there is a turnoff to the stadium parking lot, and northwest of Landshamer Strasse in Munich-Riem. It is located in the 27 hectare Olympic equestrian center. Munich city center is 7.5 kilometers west of the stadium. From Munich-Riem train station , which is on the Munich – Mühldorf railway line and served by the Munich S-Bahn , you need a seven-minute walk to the riding stadium to the northwest. There are also bus connections not far from the train station .

history

During the Second World War , the area on which the riding stadium is located was used as a military riding school.

Today's riding arena was built in 1972 for some XX. Summer Olympics erected. In 1958, the German Rider and Driver Association took over the site, which had been badly damaged by the war. The stadium has a green area of 12,000 square meters, which is surrounded by an open grandstand and a paved park, event and exhibition area. Originally the grandstands had a capacity of 23,000 spectators, and the stadium was next to the garden of Nymphenburg Palace , where the dressage tests were held, one of the two backdrops for equestrian sports at the Olympic Games in Munich. Furthermore, some disciplines of the modern pentathlon were held in the riding stadium.

German Bowl 1993 in the Reitstadion Riem, shortly after the final whistle

After the Olympic Games, the stadium developed into a concert venue. Among others, Supertramp (1983), Pink , Linkin Park , Coldplay and Green Day performed here . In 1975 and 1981, Riem was also the host of the European Show Jumping Championships , and in 1978 and 1980 the German Dressage and Show Jumping Championships took place there. On September 25, 1993, the final of the German American Football Championship was held in the Reitstadion . In the 15th German Bowl , the Munich Cowboys defeated the Cologne Crocodiles with 42:36 a.d. in front of 9,000 spectators.

In 2008, the main stand, which once had 7,000 seats and housed a restaurant and 50 reporters' booths, had to be blown up. The judges' tower and the scoreboard were torn down beforehand so that the demolition could take place without complications. In particular, the roof of the wooden structure, which tapered to a point as an isosceles triangle over the center of the grandstand and was attached to the other corners of the grandstand, was badly damaged by hailstones in 1984 and water penetrated there. As a result, the main stand had to be closed. The decision to demolish the building was made after the laminated timber slowly dissolved. However, the riding stadium still has an open grandstand.

In mid-2012, a concert ban was imposed in the Reitstadion because "due to safety concerns of the City of Munich [...] no approval could be given for an open-air event of this size in the Riem Reitstadion". Another problem in addition to the ailing stadium stands was the arrival and departure by S-Bahn from the Riem station: On days of major concerts, people jostled and ran over the tracks to get to the stadium or back to the station more quickly. The concert ended after an inspection by security officers. The building commission and the district administration department discovered serious deficiencies a few weeks beforehand: the grandstands of the facility are said to have been considerably dilapidated. Up until the ban, there was space for around 30,000 concert-goers in the stadium.

Usage tests for driving horses in the Riem riding arena during the "Pferd International 2011"

The tests of equestrian events taking place in Munich-Riem are mostly held in the surrounding riding arenas of the Olympic riding facility, and riding arenas are also available for tournaments in winter. During the " Horse International ", a major tournament that takes place every year on Ascension Day , the riding stadium is used for the show program and tests in driving .
