Roland Wohlfarth (born January 11, 1963 in Bocholt ) is a former German soccer player .

Career

In the club

After his youth at Borussia Bocholt , he was signed by MSV Duisburg in 1981 . Wohlfarth made his debut on August 8, 1981 (1st matchday) in a 1-1 draw at home against Karlsruher SC and scored his first of 120 Bundesliga goals on March 6, 1982 (24th matchday) in a 4-1 defeat in the away game against Eintracht Frankfurt . At the end of the season, MSV Duisburg was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga .

After two seasons, Wohlfarth was signed by Bayern Munich as the top scorer in the 2nd Bundesliga in 1984 . Although Wohlfarth had been signed as a reservist at the time, he immediately prevailed with twelve goals in 32 games. In the 1986 DFB Cup final against VfB Stuttgart , he became a cup hero when he contributed three goals to Bayern's 5-2 win. It was noticeable that FC Bayern bought new strikers for almost every new season ( Mark Hughes , Alan McInally , Radmilo Mihajlović , Michael Sternkopf , Brian Laudrup , Adolfo Valencia, etc.) and Wohlfarth was a reservist at the beginning, but quickly regained his regular position and kept up a double-digit number of goals came. Wohlfarth, who is always popular with Bayern fans, said: “At the beginning of each season, the newcomers had a bonus, but after three weeks at the latest the fan curve got restless and called for me. Then I… scored my goals [and] after four weeks at the latest I was back in my regular position. ”On the official website, the club praises him as“ the constant one ”who“ was bought in to replace an injured striker in an emergency… but with 119 goals in 254 games [for FC Bayern] behind Gerd Müller and Kalle Rummenigge third-best Bayern scorer of all time ". He also scored 28 times in 55 European Cup games .

After a one-year interlude with the French first division club AS Saint-Étienne , he returned to Germany . From then on he played at VfL Bochum , with whom he - as in his first season - had to relegate to the second division at the end of the season.

In the same season Wohlfarth experienced his career low point : In the first doping verdict of the Bundesliga on February 16, 1995, Wohlfarth, who had a "preference for good food", was sentenced to a two-month ban for taking the appetite suppressant Recatol . Recommended in a pharmacy as safe, Recatol contained the drug norephedrine, which is on the doping list .

The VfL Bochum managed the direct promotion. Wohlfarth only played five more times for the club before moving to the second division VfB Leipzig in 1997 . In his 15th game for Leipzig on June 7, 1998 (34th matchday), in the goalless draw in the home game against SG Wattenscheid 09 , which meant relegation from the second division for VfB, he said goodbye to higher-class football . Then he moved to Wuppertaler SV and again a year later to the first division club 1. FC Bocholt , where he had to end his career in 2000 due to a broken fibula.

National team

Wohlfarth belonged to the A-Juniors selection (U-18) , which won the European Championship on June 3, 1981 in Düsseldorf with a 1-0 win against Poland as a Junior European Champion. With the U-19 juniors he won on October 18, 1981 with a 4-0 against Qatar in the final of the Junior World Championship in Sydney . In the six games of the third tournament, he scored four times, one of them in the final.

Although he managed again and again to get his place at Bayern and he twice top scorer was the Bundesliga (1989 17 and 1991 with 21 goals), he could in the senior team against strong competition in the storm (with Jurgen Klinsmann , Rudi Völler and Karl-Heinz Riedle ) do not enforce. Wohlfarth played in only two international test matches , each lasting 90 minutes: on October 15, 1986 in Hanover in a 2-2 draw against Spain and on September 6, 1989 in Dublin in a 1-1 draw against Ireland .

Wohlfarth was considered an introverted character who was described by the Tagesspiegel as a "media-shy antistar". Even when the manager of FC Bayern Uli Hoeneß recommended a more offensive self-portrayal, Wohlfarth remained reserved in public.
