The 2009/10 Bundesliga was the 47th season of the top German division in men's football. It began on August 7, 2009 with the reigning champions VfL Wolfsburg's game against VfB Stuttgart (2-0) and ended on May 8, 2010 with the 34th matchday.

FC Bayern Munich became German champions for the 22nd time this season . At the winter break, Bayer 04 Leverkusen led the Bundesliga table after a first half of the season without defeat and thus won the unofficial title of autumn champions . Last with six points behind the penultimate and ten points behind the relegation place was Hertha BSC , which after a win at the beginning of the season against Hannover 96 could only record three draws until the winter break and after the 33rd matchday as bottom of the table and thus also as first relegation was certain. The second direct relegated team was VfL Bochum after the 34th matchday , while 1. FC Nürnberg reached the relegation place in tenth place in the table and secured relegation with two wins in the two relegation games against FC Augsburg. After the 32nd matchday, FC Bayern Munich and FC Schalke 04 qualified for the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League .

Season course

Upper third of the table

After a year without a championship, FC Bayern Munich has now won the cup again. He was trained by Louis van Gaal , who was the first Dutch coach to win this title. After difficulties at the beginning of the season - there was already speculation about his dismissal - van Gaal succeeded in converting Bayern's playing system to an attractive attack football based on possession. The game against the wing player Franck Ribéry and the Dutch national player Arjen Robben, who was piloted by the coach after a few match days from Real Madrid to Bayern Munich, was characteristic . Bayern's game in midfield was driven by double-sixs Bastian Schweinsteiger and Mark van Bommel . Van Gaal made a name for himself again as a supporter of young players and integrated Thomas Müller and Holger Badstuber , who came from the club's youth division and who soon became national players, and Diego Contento into the team. On the 24th matchday, the Munich team took the lead again for the first time in over a year and a half and only had to give it up once on the 28th matchday. After the season Bayern also won the cup final against Werder Bremen 4-0 and were in the Champions League final, in which they lost 2-0 against Inter Milan .

FC Schalke 04 started the season with three-time “master maker” Felix Magath , and after two opening wins, the Knappen took over the championship lead for one day. In the second half of the season Schalke was never worse than third and took over the lead of the table again on matchday 28, but lost it on the following matchday with a 1: 2 home defeat against FC Bayern. In the end, the ninth runner-up in the club's history was a great success for the financially troubled club, which, with its relatively young team with only a few known players, was by no means considered a title contender at the beginning of the season. Center forward Kevin Kurányi achieved his best record of the season with 18 goals and declared his departure after a five-year stint at the end of the season.

The season was changeable for SV Werder Bremen, trained by Thomas Schaaf . After a mixed start, the club was in second place for five games towards the end of the first half of the season. However, a weaker phase followed with five defeats in a row between the 16th and 20th matchday. Until the end of the season there was only one defeat in Dortmund. The 2-0 success on the penultimate matchday at Schalke practically secured Bayern the championship and SV Werder the Champions League qualification, which was considered a success in view of the course of the season. Claudio Pizarro was the outstanding striker of the Hanseatic League and was fifth on the scorers list with 16 goals in 26 games. The talented young players Marko Marin and Mesut Özil sometimes offered excellent performances and both, along with goalkeeper Tim Wiese and defensive player Per Mertesacker , found consideration for the World Cup squad - in contrast to Torsten Frings , who was not helped by a strong season finale.

Bayer Leverkusen started the season well under the new coach Jupp Heynckes , showed offensive, technically inclined football, was in first place from the eighth to the 23rd matchday without interruption and even remained unbeaten until the 25th matchday. The experienced Finnish national player Sami Hyypiä , who came from Liverpool FC, stabilized the defense, Stefan Kießling caused a sensation in the storm and ended the season with 21 goals in second place on the goalscorer list. The talent Toni Kroos , on loan from FC Bayern , often knew how to impress in the attacking midfield and made his debut in the national team and, alongside Kießling, a place in the World Cup squad. Towards the end of the season, Leverkusen's form deteriorated noticeably, so that in the last ten games they had five defeats and only three wins. In the end, the team, which seemed almost qualified for the Champions League, had to be satisfied with a place in the Europa League .

Borussia Dortmund started the season rather poorly under Jürgen Klopp . After a low in 15th place on matchday seven, however, a race to catch up began. At times there was even hope for a place in the Champions League, but it was never quite enough for third place. In the end, BVB finished fifth, the best position since third place in 2003, and achieved participation in the Europa League. The Argentinian Lucas Barrios made a decisive contribution to the performance of the Black and Yellows with 19 goals and took third place in the list of goalscorers.

As in previous years, VfB Stuttgart had a weak start to the season. The penultimate place in the table on matchday 14 soon led to the replacement of coach Markus Babbel by Swiss Christian Gross . In the second half of the season, however, VfB had the best record of all clubs, so that the Swabians could still achieve an international starting position. Strong players from VfB included Sami Khedira and the native Brazilian Cacau , who both played in the German World Cup line-up.

midfield

Hamburger SV with the new coach Bruno Labbadia got off to a strong start: at the beginning only two draws out of six wins, first place from the fourth to the seventh game day. In particular, midfield senior Zé Roberto , who came from FC Bayern, impressed during this phase. But from then on, things gradually went downhill. The public saw parallels here with Bayer Leverkusen, which was also trained by Labbadia last year. Lengthy injuries to the Brazilian and center forward Paolo Guerrero were also of little help, as was the signing of the former Dutch national team's center forward Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was retired from Real Madrid . At the end of the season, the focus was on advancing into the Europa League final, which will take place in the Hamburg stadium. Even the dismissal of Labbadia after a 1: 5 defeat at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on matchday 32 - technical coach Ricardo Moniz followed him - did not help HSV to achieve the goals of the season. A loss in the semi-finals of the Europa League at Fulham FC in London put an end to hopes in this competition. In the Bundesliga, the Hanseatic team ended up only seventh and, for the first time since the 2001/02 season, did not achieve an international starting position.

The reigning champions VfL Wolfsburg, who was trained by the former Stuttgart master trainer Armin Veh after Magath's departure , took over the championship lead right at the start of the season. But after the third game day, the club slipped into midfield after three defeats in a row. In the short term, the Wolves seemed to stabilize, but from the 13th matchday a series of ten winless games followed. After seven, Armin Veh's days were numbered and he was replaced by Lorenz-Günther Köstner , the coach of the club amateurs. Under this, the club achieved a series of seven wins in eight games - only interrupted by a 1: 5 home defeat against relegated Hertha BSC. Overall, VfL scored 1.73 points per game under Köstner and 1.26 points under Veh. In the end there was eighth place. Edin Džeko succeeded his strike partner Grafite with 22 goals, only eleven goals this season, as the best scorer in the league - it was the first time in Bundesliga history that two different players from one club were successively top scorer. Hopes of participation in the World Cup were not fulfilled for either Alexander Madlung or Christian Gentner , nine of the legionnaires such as the Brazilians Josué and Grafite, but were considered for the provisional contingent of their home countries.

The resurrected FSV Mainz 05 experienced the most successful Bundesliga season in its history. Although the club initially caused a stir when he left the DFB Cup a week before the start of the season and then dismissed the promotion coach Jørn Andersen and replaced him with Thomas Tuchel , under this the club was never in danger of relegation and even occupied Europe at times in the first half of the season -League starting places and finished the year in ninth place. Among the players, Andreas Ivanschitz , the former captain of the Austrian national team, striker Aristide Bancé and goalkeeper Heinz Müller , who returned to Germany after five years abroad and was actually only intended as a substitute, stood out.

The Eintracht Frankfurt team, coached by Michael Skibbe , was in mid-table for the entire season and finished in tenth place. The team had to compensate for the failure of their Greek striker Ioannis Amanatidis from the tenth match day .

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim under Ralf Rangnick , who was still surprisingly autumn champion last year as a newcomer with enthusiastic football, started weakly and once again managed to climb to third place on the seventh match day. From then on, a downward trend began, which led the club almost to the relegation zone. Frustrated fans blocked the team bus after the game in Cologne, internally the house blessing was crooked and manager Jan Schindelmeiser announced his departure. In the end, the team finished eleventh. Ex-national goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand ended the season without a contract extension, defender Andreas Beck only made it into the preliminary World Cup line-up.

For Borussia Mönchengladbach under Michael Frontzeck , the season was relatively unspectacular. After a decent start, there was a low point towards the middle of the first half of the season, after which the club did not have any major problems. It was almost the same with the rivals from 1. FC Köln under Zvonimir Soldo .

Relegation battle

Newcomers SC Freiburg also showed a season curve similar to Mönchengladbach and Cologne, but had a narrow point gap. Robin Dutt became the only coach of a club in immediate danger of relegation that was not changed.

For Hannover 96 the season was overshadowed by the suicide of goalkeeper and team captain Robert Enke . Coach Dieter Hecking had previously resigned and was replaced by Andreas Bergmann . After Enke's death after the twelfth game day, the club also collapsed in terms of sport and occupied a relegation or relegation place for much of the second half of the season, which the third coach Mirko Slomka could not change at first. It was only on the penultimate day of the match with a 6-1 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach that they made the leap to the last direct non-relegation place, which was last defended with a victory over Bochum.

1. FC Nürnberg was in a relegation battle throughout the season. After the last four first round games ended particularly badly, promotion coach Michael Oenning was replaced by Dieter Hecking. On the 25th matchday, after a victory over the previously undefeated Leverkusen, they achieved a direct non-relegation place. However, this was lost on the penultimate matchday, so that the Franks had to compete in the relegation. After they had only achieved promotion in this way a year earlier, this time they managed to stay up against FC Augsburg . Thus, for the first time since the 1989/90 season, only two clubs were relegated. Albert Bunjaku in particular stood out among the Franks. After playing third-rate the year before, he has now scored twelve goals and became a Swiss national player.

VfL Bochum also had a difficult season. After starting with Marcel Koller and replacing him on an interim basis with his assistant coach Frank Heinemann , Heiko Herrlich was responsible for the team from October 28th . After a good end of the first half of the season, VfL managed to break away from the relegation ranks at the beginning of the second half of the season. In the end, however, there was relegation after four years of first class, which even Dariusz Wosz, as coach of the last two games, could not prevent.

The season turned into a debacle for Hertha BSC. After the fourth place in the table in the previous season, the club started with some claims. But already on the sixth match day, the Berliners took over the last place in the table, which they could not leave until the end and thus relegated after 13 years of membership in the Bundesliga. With 16 home games without a win in a row, Hertha also set a new Bundesliga negative record. The fact that coach Lucien Favre had been replaced by Friedhelm Funkel was ultimately unsuccessful, as was the loan from former top scorer Theofanis Gekas during the winter break.
