Rudolf Hauser (born March 19, 1909 in Vienna , Austria ; † March 24, 2000 there ) was an Austrian politician and trade unionist .

Life

Rudolf Hauser was born on March 19, 1909, to a working class family in Vienna. First he visited the Technological Trade Museum (TGM) and worked as a mechanical engineer. He then joined the socialist movement. He was federal chairman for two years at the “Socialist Middle School Students” association. He then began his studies and was active in the free trade union movement. As a member of the internship group of the Federation of Industrial Employees, he held several positions until 1934.

In 1937 Rudolf Häuser was temporarily employed as a mechanical engineer at the MIAG dairy. During the time of the Estates dictatorship, he participated in the illegal Free Employees Union of Austria (FRAGÖ) and, after the “Anschluss”, in the resistance against National Socialism .

During the Second World War he was imprisoned as a political prisoner by the Gestapo in the Dachau concentration camp from 1941 to 1945 . After his dismissal, he held the office of works council chairman at MIAG and first regional chairman of the union of private employees (GPA) in Vienna until 1959 . Before that, he was appointed its deputy chairman in 1953 and then switched to federal politics.

From 1962 he was a member of the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ). Until 1974 he sat for his party as a member of the National Council . From April 21, 1970 to September 30, 1976 he was Vice Chancellor and Federal Minister for Social Affairs under the Federal Government of Federal Chancellor Bruno Kreisky . There he was significantly involved in labor and social law issues such as the Labor Constitution Act.

In 1962 Rudolf Häuser took over the office of chairman of the GPA, which he held until 1974. From 1963 to 1975 he was Vice President of the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions (ÖGB). After leaving politics, he lived a secluded life. On March 24, 2000 Rudolf Hauser committed suicide in Vienna. He was 91 years old. Houses was buried at the Vienna Central Cemetery .
