The Samuel P. Taylor State Park is a California State Park in Marin County . The approximately 1166 hectare park is named after Samuel Penfield Taylor (1827-1886), who came to wealth during the California gold rush and acquired the land near what is now Lagunitas-Forest Knolls in the second half of the 19th century. Taylor built California's first paper mill there and is also buried in the state park area. In 1945 the country fell to the US state California. A special feature of the park is an approximately 243 hectare pristine primary forest with coastal redwoods .

The park was already used for tourism during Taylor's lifetime. It was connected from Sausalito to the railway network of the North Pacific Coast Railroad . Under the name "Camp Taylor Resort" Taylor operated a hotel, a campsite and a dance pavilion for guests from nearby San Francisco . After the park was threatened with closure due to the tight California state budget, the National Park Service took over its maintenance and care in 2011. Today the park is used, among other things, by weekenders, who find numerous barbecue and picnic facilities at "Camp Taylor".

The vegetation in Samuel P. Taylor State Park is made up of conifers that alternate with grasslands. Characteristic of this part of California are the coastal sequoia ( Sequoia sempervirens ), the common Douglas fir ( Pseudotsuga menziesii ), the California aralia ( Aralia californica ), evergreen oaks ( Quercus ) and the American strawberry tree ( Arbutus menziesii ). Raccoons ( Procyon lotor ), skunks (Mephitidae), coyotes ( Canis latrans ), bobcats ( Lynx rufus ), gray foxes ( Urocyon cinereoargenteus ), pumas ( Puma concolor ), the Columbia black- tailed deer ( Odocoileus hemionus columbartianus ) live in the park the mule deer , as well as the Sonoma chipmunk , an endemic species of squirrel in Northern California. In the autumn and winter, silver salmon ( Oncorhynchus kisutch ) and steelhead trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss irideus ), an anadromous migratory form of rainbow trout , spawn in Lagunitas Creek , a small river that runs through the park . Lagunitas Creek is an ideal habitat for the endangered species Syncaris pacifica , a freshwater shrimp .
