Switzerland (landscape name)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The name Switzerland is used around the world in names of landscapes ( choronymics , room names) or other landscape objects.

Basics

The name Switzerland there are times 191-at least, of which 105 times in Germany . This is what Switzerland Tourism , the national marketing and sales organization of Switzerland , determined and displayed on a board next to the Swiss Federal Palace. The Neue Zürcher Zeitung even counted 233 uses. In his study, Philippe Frei counts a total of 540 Switzerland names.

In the romantic era, an appealing, topographically turbulent landscape was often inflated with “Switzerland”. Various tourist regions chose - regardless of their topography - the addition "Switzerland" for marketing reasons, as the term also generally stands for scenic beauty, prosperity and a well-organized state. Swiss emigrants also refer to their homeland in this way . The painter Adrian Zingg , who worked in Dresden, for example, was reminded of the mountains of the Swiss Jura in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains .

Theodor Fontane already describes the inflation of the term ; In his hikes through the Mark Brandenburg he scoffs at the fashion of his time to cover hilly lake landscapes with the synonym of the mountainous region:

"The Swiss are now getting smaller and smaller, and so there is no longer just a Märkische, but also a Ruppiner Switzerland."

Friedrich Dürrenmatt said, ironically and politically : "The world will either go under or it will become Swiss ."

On September 22, 1992, a rock garden by the Bernese artist and blues musician George Steinmann called The Balance of Things was inaugurated next to the Bundeshaus in Bern . It contains 44 stones that come from regions on five continents that have the expression "Switzerland" in their name.
