The 35th Tour de France led from June 30th to July 25th 1948 on 21 stages over 4922 kilometers counterclockwise through France. The start and finish were in Paris .
Race course
The tour was dominated by the Italian Gino Bartali , who won seven stages and at the end of the tour was over 26 minutes ahead of the runner-up. The mountain rider, who had already won the Tour in 1938 , also secured the mountain classification. To this day, Bartali is the driver with the greatest gap between his tour victories.
Bartali won on the first stage but was only able to wear the yellow jersey for one day. Louison Bobet won the sixth stage to Biarritz . He took over the lead in the overall standings, which he was able to defend in the subsequent Pyrenees stages. On the stage to Sanremo , Italy , he was about to give up due to a boil , but fought his way to the finish and was able to continue driving in yellow the next day in Cannes after a stage win. Only in the Alps did the Frenchman have to give up his jersey after Bartalis' three victories in a row.
Of the 120 riders who started, 16 were excluded because they were in last place in the overall standings on the third to 18th stages. Tour director Jacques Goddet made the tour more difficult for the water carriers , as they now also had to drive for their own position. 44 drivers were rated in Paris, Bartali had mastered the route at an average speed of 33.443 km / h.
