Jacques Anquetil after his tour victory in the Prinzenparkstadion

The 44th Tour de France took place from July 5th to 28th, 1957 and ran over 4,665 km on 22 stages. 120 cyclists took part in the tour , 56 of which were classified.

Race course

As in the previous year, André Darrigade won the first stage, but the next day he had to pass his yellow jersey on to his French team-mate René Privat , who had won the second stage three minutes ahead of the peloton . Darrigade was later able to win the last two stages.

Privat was able to defend his lead up to the fifth stage before a breakaway group peppered with several favorites arrived: Gilbert Bauvin was second overall last year, won the stage, Jacques Anquetil took over the yellow jersey, but initially only for two days. Only after his stage win in Thonon-les-Bains and a good placement on the first mountain stage the next day was he back in the leading position, which he never relinquished until the finish in Paris. After a weakness at the Col d'Aubisque , Anquetil recovered and with his two victories in the individual time trial increased his lead over second placed Marcel Janssens to almost 15 minutes.

Gastone Nencini , who like Janssens had no chance in the overall standings against the French team in the mountains, secured the mountain standings . The green jersey was won by Jean Forestier from France. Adolf Christian was the first Austrian to achieve a place on the podium.

After the French national team had to let a driver from a regional team win the Tour de France last year , the team was rejuvenated and Anquetil, who was only 23 years old, was able to win significantly on his first tour participation. Overall, the team around Anquetil won 13 of the 24 stages, wore the yellow jersey on all but one stage and presented the winner of the green jersey in addition to the overall winner.
