Most combative driver | Alexander Vinokurov |
The 90th Tour de France was held from July 5th to 27th, 2003 in 20 stages over a total of 3427 km. 198 racing drivers took part in the tour, of which 147 were classified. After one of the most exciting races in recent years, Lance Armstrong won this time just ahead of Jan Ullrich . This tour was to have a decisive influence on the career of Joseba Beloki , who suffered a serious fall after a puncture on the 9th stage and never recovered from it. There were also some surprises. Alexander Vinokurow was third, Tyler Hamilton fourth and Haimar Zubeldia fifth, ahead of his captain Iban Mayo , who came in sixth and stayed a little below expectations.
On October 22, 2012, the UCI World Cycling Federation announced the cancellation of all Armstrong titles since August 1, 1998, including all of the American's Tour de France successes. Successors to first place were not used.
100 years tour
On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the tour, the route was based on that of the first edition in 1903 : The tour began and ended like a hundred years earlier in Paris , as did the other five stage cities of the first tour in history ( Lyon , Marseille , Toulouse , Bordeaux and Nantes ) were visited. The anniversary tour also had no route detours and stages to neighboring countries and thus remained only on French soil for the first time in years.
Pepe Danquart accompanied the professional cyclists Erik Zabel and Rolf Aldag during the tour for his documentary Hell Tour .
Favorites
The French sports newspaper L'Équipe , organizer of the tour, traditionally awards stars before the start of the race to mark the favorites. The four-time tour winner Lance Armstrong received five stars as a top favorite. This was followed by giro winner Gilberto Simoni (four stars) as well as Jan Ullrich , Joseba Beloki and Santiago Botero (three stars each).
