The 57th Tour de France took place from June 26th to July 19th, 1970 and ran over 4,366 km in 23 stages. 150 racing drivers took part in the tour, 100 of which were classified.

Race course

After winning the prologue , last year's winner Eddy Merckx took over the overall lead, but passed it on to his team-mate Italo Zilioli before the team time trial . On the sixth stage, Merckx took back the yellow jersey and defended it until the finish in Paris. As in the previous year, he celebrated an undisputed victory, this time with over 12 minutes ahead of the runner-up, the Dutchman Joop Zoetemelk .

In addition to the overall classification, Merckx also won the combined and mountain classification by a clear margin. In addition, Merckx was able to achieve eight stage wins, including three time trials, stages in the mountains and on the flat. In Grenoble the Belgian crossed the finish line with a lead of 1:35, at Mont Ventoux also over a minute before the second stage.

Merckx's Belgian compatriot Walter Godefroot won two stages and the points standings just ahead of Merckx and thus prevented a repeat of Merckx's triumph from the previous year, when he had won all important ratings. Merckx achieved the double with his Tour victory after he had already finished the Giro d'Italia with a victory before the Tour de France .

The 18th stage to La Mongie was won by Bernard Thévenet , who was just 22 years old . On the stage he already seemed left behind, but fought his way back on the Col du Tourmalet and won his first tour stage with a margin of 49 seconds.

The tour from 1970 was the last one that was ridden without any rest days .
