The University of Newcastle is a university in Newcastle in the Australian state of New South Wales .

The University of Newcastle obtained its independence in 1965, previously it had been an independent branch of the University of New South Wales as Newcastle University College from 1951 . In addition to the main location on the Callaghan Campus in Newcastle, Newcastle has a campus in the city center, as well as the other locations in Ourimbah , Port Macquarie , Singapore and Sydney .

The university has been headed by the scientist Caroline McMillen as president since 2011 . The businessman Paul Jeans has been the university's chancellor since 2013 and has a representative and advisory role in this role.

Development of the university

Planning for an independent university in Newcastle began in 1962, the step towards autonomy was completed in 1965 and the first 138 students graduated the following year. In the early years, the organization consisted of faculties of humanities , natural sciences , economics , engineering , applied sciences and architecture .

The Faculty of Medicine was established in 1975, with the Newcastle training influencing medical education across Australia with its new approaches to teaching. Problem-based learning was introduced and students were involved in the treatment of patients earlier.
