The University of Tasmania (UTAS) is an Australian university based in Hobart and Launceston on the island of Tasmania . It was founded in 1890 , making it the fourth oldest university in Australia.

The university was founded in 1890 as a college in Hobart; In 1991 it merged with the Tasmanian Institute of Technology in Launceston.
UTAS offers over 200 different courses in undergraduate subjects as well as postgraduate opportunities. The university is known for its educational and research qualities in arctic and marine sciences. She works closely with the Australian Antarctic Division and regularly sends researchers and students to one of the four Australian research stations in the Antarctic . It also has its own radio telescope in the Mount Pleasant Radio Observatory .
