action

In 1975, eight-year-old Jean Gray accidentally used telekinesis to cause a car accident that killed her parents. Shortly thereafter, Professor Charles Xavier takes her to Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, where he mentally banishes the accident from her memories and helps her improve her psychological abilities.

In 1992 the X-Men respond to an emergency signal from the space shuttle Endeavor, which is severely damaged by energy similar to a solar flare. While the X-Men are able to save all of the astronauts, Jean is stranded and taking all the energy into her body. Jean survives the event unconscious and her powers are greatly enhanced by the incident. At the same time, the mental blockade set by Xavier is destroyed and she accidentally attacks the mutant students who are celebrating in Xavier's school after a mental breakdown, and then passes out. With awakened memories, she travels to her native Red Hook, New York, after discovering that her father is still alive. The X-Men try to get Jean back home, but she injures Peter Maximoff, accidentally killing Raven Darkholme, and injuring several local police officers before she escapes.

Jean travels to the refugee island of Genosha, which is a government-approved refuge for mutants, in order to receive support from Erik Lehnsherr in controlling their powers. Erik refuses, however, to protect those who fled after Jean delivers a battle to US forces charged with arresting them for injuring police officers. Jean meets Vuk, the leader of a changing alien race called D'Bari, who explains to her that she was possessed by some kind of cosmic power that wiped out the D'Baris' home planet years ago. The Force had consumed everyone it encountered until it encountered Jean. Meanwhile, Hank McCoy, feeling betrayed by the death of his girlfriend Raven, triggered by Xavier's manipulation of Jean's memories, allies with Erik. Erik, informed of Raven's death, now also wants revenge. The group, along with mutants who have fled, travels to New York City to kill Jean.

When the X-Men find out about Erik and Hank's plan, they stumble upon their group in New York. As they fight, Erik manages to infiltrate the building and confront Jean, but she is overwhelmed by her skills. Then Xavier tries to get through to her with Kurt Wagner. Jean attacks her until Xavier persuades her to read his memories so that she can become aware of herself again. Jean feels guilty and asks Vuk to take power from her. It turns out that is what Vuk wants, then to reshape and erase all life on earth. Xavier and Scott manage to prevent Vuk from absorbing Jean's full strength, with Vuk escaping. Both mutant factions, including Jean, are captured by a special unit to be taken by train to a secret security facility. The train is attacked by Vuk and the D'Bari. While the soldiers are being overwhelmed by the shapeshifters, the mutants are released from their bonds to fight the threat. Xavier connects with Jean, who is now clear and takes control of the power within her. Vuk tries again to completely free Jean from the force, but Jean kills her in orbit and sacrifices himself in the process.

After the incident, the school is renamed "Jean Grey's School for Gifted Youngsters" and Hank becomes its new dean. Xavier has retired after decades of fighting for mutant rights. While he settled in Paris, Xavier was reunited with Erik and reluctantly agreed to play a game of chess with him. When they start playing, a flaming phoenix appears in the sky.

production

Original and staff

The film is based on the comic book The Dark Phoenix Saga by John Byrne and Chris Claremont . At the beginning of February 2017 a first table of contents was published. The focus of the film is supposed to be the mutant Jean Gray, whose powers become more and more powerful, which changes her. Therefore, the remaining X-Men, such as Mystique, Charles Xavier, Cyclops, Storm Alexandra and Magneto, will soon have to decide whether to stand up against their own friend and maybe even kill her in order to save the rest of the world.

In spring 2017, Simon Kinberg revealed that the film would be set in the 1990s. On June 14, 2017, Fox officially confirmed that Kinberg would direct. As it became known in January 2018, Hans Zimmer composes the film music.

Cast and dubbing

Jean Gray is played by Sophie Turner . In the spring of 2017 it became known that other actors will also return to their leading roles, which they had already played in previous films. At the end of June 2017 it was announced that Evan Peters will also return to the role of Quicksilver in the film.

The German synchronization was based on a dialogue book and the dialogue direction by Tobias Meister on behalf of Interopa Film GmbH in Berlin.

Marketing and Publishing

A first trailer was presented at the end of September 2018. The official poster for the film and a second trailer followed in February 2019. The film should hit US cinemas on June 7, 2019, after previously announced for early November 2018 and later postponed to February 2019. Shortly after the first trailer was released, the film was postponed again by four months. Kinberg cited the reason that the effects were not ready on time for the launch date and that a release in June could achieve larger sales in China, where the film started on June 6, 2019. A theatrical release in Germany took place on the same day, in the USA and Austria on the following day. It was later announced that the theatrical release had been postponed at the request of James Cameron . He is said to have feared that the Alita: Battle Angel he produced could not achieve the desired sales with a start date in the Christmas season, and would therefore have obtained a postponement to the original Dark Phoenix start day. According to Simon Kinberg, the latter could have been ready in time for a February start.

The film should be available from October 17, 2019 on Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray .

reception

Age rating

In the US, the film was rated PG-13 by the MPAA . In Germany, he received a release from the age of 12 . The reason for the release states that the focus of the film is a strong heroine who offers herself to children from the age of 12 as a positive figure to identify with. Although there are a number of effective, fast-paced action scenes in which people are occasionally killed or injured, this is not explicitly brought into the picture. The positive basic statement about tolerance and solidarity as well as the long happy ending would also help to ease the burden. The film critic Antje Wessels remarks that the director uses the PG-13 rating or the FSK approval from 12 years of age as much as possible in order to be able to present broken bones and bloody impalations at least briefly in close-up.

Reviews

So far, the film has won 23% of the 350 critics on Rotten Tomatoes , which is the worst rating of any film from the X-Men series . The consensus is that the film ends the X-Men franchise "deeply disappointing." On Metacritic , the film received a Metascore of 43 out of a possible 100 points.

The film critic Antje Wessels writes that Simon Kinberg , both as a director and as a writer, benefits greatly from the different skills and personalities of his heroes. Even though the finale of Dark Phoenix is already tending towards CGI overkill, cameraman Mauro Fiore saved large parts of the scenes with an overview and Kinberg by making the choreographies as varied as possible: “There is slashing, shooting, being beaten and, above all, by made use of the varied mutant skills. ”Wessels sums up that the film is a successful emotional examination of inner conflicts, which offers many new approaches to discussion about the known characters and is also pleasantly entertaining.
