Bala Cynwyd Middle School (affectionately referred to as BC by its students) is located on 510 Bryn Mawr Avenue, in Bala Cynwyd, a community within Lower Merion Township, Pennsylvania, United States with a ZIP code of 19004.

Bala Cynwyd is a public middle school in the Lower Merion School District. The school's logo is a knight known as the BC Knight. Bala Cynwyd's Motto is T.R.U.S.T. [Tolerance, Responsibility, Understanding, Self-Esteem, Togetherness]. The school song is titled: Bala Cynwyd Alma Mater. There are 856 students and 73 teachers, as of November 2006. The Principal is Dr. Patricia Haupt, with Margery Andersen as First Assistant Principal as well as Gail Brown as Second Assistant Principal. Most of the BCMS teachers have an online message board, also called an e-board, at the Lower Merion School District Website. This school became part of the Blue Ribbon School Program during the 2001-2002 school year.

History

The Bala Cynwyd Junior High School (now called Bala Cynwyd Middle School) was built in 1938 and founded in 1939 by Jacob Jones and "is still in use for educational purposes". The school is on the National Register of Historic Places, and was renovated in 2002.

Extra-Curricular Activities

Bala Cynwyd offers students many extracurricular activities, outside of required classes. These consist of athletic teams, musical and theater groups, and academic teams, such as Science Olympiad and TSA.

B.C. Applause

BC Applause is the theatre organization at Bala Cynwyd Middle School. It is run by Mrs. Lee Reilly. It uses the funds that it raises for various charities, such as Alex's Lemonade Stand.

Athletics

No cuts are permitted on any athletic team, with the exception of basketball, where there are simply too many people joining. Intermural sports are only available to 6th graders, while interscholastic sports are for 7th and 8th grade.

Science Olympiad

The Bala Cynwyd Middle School Science Olympiad team recently placed 11th of 60 at the National Science Olympiad Competition, as well as second in the State of Pennsylvania, and first in Southeast Pennsylvania Regionals. In the past they have placed as high as 4th at the National Science Olympiad Competition.

Sewickley Academy and Shadyside Academy in Pittsburg have always had a long battle with Bala Cynwyd to reach the National competition.

In Bala Cynwyd, there is a student government. The lower-level student government is made of two Class Representatives and Members at Large from each team. The higher-level student government consists of a single president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer.

-I really can't tell you how it's done in the Navy, but with most foreign awards in the USAF they are almost always a case by case basis any ways. The standard, what standard? Unless it is one of the foreign medals that are on all branches blanketed approved list, their is really no standard. Like I said it's case by case basis. I ask you to look at the German Armed Forces Badge for Military Proficiency page references, you'll see that ROTC cadets compete for this award annually. For instance every General or Admiral coming out of [[USFK]] or [[CNFK]] is almost always awarded some weird Korean decoration.  The one stop sign to this is when the decoration is so rare and off the wall that the Defense Department can declare it not authorized for wear on a uniform.  There is then a separate category of awards which the officer cant wear but can still have in the record and these are listed as "awards in the custody of the state department".  It is an interesting system but in the end the rank and file of the military rarely see such medals.  Germany is interesting since there are a lot of marksmanship and sports medals that get awarded, that is very true. -It makes some sense since the BR army has 4 classes of Private before responsibility is given at Lance Corporal and the fact that Corporals in the US army are rarer than they used to be - most being Specialist and getting to be Sergenat (OR-5) when taking repsosibility.
