[[Hydrophyllum capitatum]]. the ''Ballhead Waterleaf'' grows in moist forest clearings from 3,500 feet to the timberline from British Columbia, east of the Cascades and into eastern Colorado in the United States. The leaves, stems, and flowers of Ballhead Waterleaf wer an important early Spring food for American Indians in these regions. The flannel-like leaf surfaces allow the plant to hold water droplets, hence the name "waterleaf". The plant tastes like a bitter flannel shirt unless well cooked, and is quite palatable and very nutricious.
