University of Petra (UOP) is a private university in Amman, Jordan. The University offers the Bachelor and Master Program. The University is located on the airport road. It offers an applied education.

About the University

The university was established in 1991.^[1] Its first class graduated in 1994 and was then called the "Jordan University for Girls" since in its policy, it was adopted to be a university dedicated to girls. However, the name was changed to University of Petra in 1999 for its new policy of allowing male students to join it.

The university offers a variety of programs at its nine faculties. Arabic is used for teaching of humanities, and English is used as the teaching medium in most of the other disciplines. The nine faculties are:

Green University

In 2015, University of Petra transformed to a solar power system to generate full electric power from 1.5 MW. Previously, the university's energy consumption on campus for 2012 was 3,066,631 kWh and in 2013 the consumption decreased to 2,886,705 kWh. In 2014, power consumption dropped to 2.306.845 kWh as a result of changing a valve. UoP invested in over USD 2.2 million in a rooftop photovoltaic (PV) solar system that has been installed on top of all campus building and parking lots. The total production capacity of the PV system is 3 MW DC capacity. Since 2019, upon the completion of the PV system installation, the PV system produces about 5 GW-h of electricity annually. The electricity produced by the system covered over 193 % (almost the double) of the university needs for the years 2020 and 2021, and reduced the Green House Gases (GHGs) emissions by about 1500 tons of CO2, eq annually. UOP optimize the water consumption by reusing treated wastewater discharged from an on-campus wastewater treatment plant. Treated wastewater is used to irrigate all lawns, gardens, shrubs and trees through drip-irrigation to maintain a green campus. General services department at UOP has issued a directive to give the priority to water efficient plants when considering any improvement to the campus. The treatment plant discharges 37000 m³/year that covers about 60% of the total water consumption of the campus. The rest of the water needs are covered by extraction from groundwater aquifer located within the campus boundaries. The UOP is committed to the protection of the environment through the implementation of an effective waste management program. The waste management efforts include recycling, which is an important waste management activity that helps conserve resources and land spaces and also reduces waste disposal costs. In addition to electronic exams, electronically minutes of meetings and memos. The campus is equipped with pedestrian crosswalks while buses and vehicles are not allowed to wander the university except on the ring road in order to enter and exit the campus.^{[citation needed]}

The University has about 287 teaching staff members, and the majority of which are Jordanians, but there are International lecturers from different countries.^{[citation needed]}

Students are assisted to adapt to University life and culture by the Deanship of Student Affairs (DSA) and their academic advisors. UOP provides transportation services for students for a nominal fee.^{[citation needed]}

The University of Petra is home to about 1000 international students.^{[citation needed]}

Research

The Deanship of Graduate Studies and Research is the Center of the research activities at UOPP. It is formed of two councils; One for research activities and the other for graduate programs. In accordance with the accreditation criteria, stipulated by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, 5% of each university's budget is allocated to support research activities.
